11 371km realist in 42 days ?

Hi everyone !

I've read a lot on this forum and seriously it is awesome !
I found the community really helping so I thought I could also ask for help.

Basically I first planned to land in January in Santiago, Chile, buy a bike there, and go through all the registrations (with these steps).
Next begin my trip, going down to Patagonia until I reach Torres Del Paine. Then go back North, up to Cuzco and then sell my bike in Peru.

That planned pretty much got f***ked when I learn that selling legally in Peru when your bike isn't from there is pretty much impossible. (I heard you could maybe *donate* it but still it doesn't sound right)

So my next brilliant idea was to land directly in Peru (lima) buy my bike there, do my trip and come back to sell it there.

Another problem arise, I am supposed to land in SA January the 17th and I should be taking a flight back the 10th of March. Because yes, my flight is already booked...

My big question is, is it doable ?

I am open to all suggestion !

Thank you and have a great day !

11371 divided in 42 is approx 270 km a day. Yes thats totally doable. Wont leave you very many days off the bike though. You just have to plan according to your avaiable time. Just cross fingers that your bike dont break down and that you will need spareparts from the other side of the globe or that you will be stuck somewhere because of bad weather, landslides, washed out roads etc....

To get your moto, Contact Toby at adventure motorcycle tours in Peru and all South America - Home you can buy the moto of your choice and Toby preps it for you and you have the titles in your name within a few hours and you are on the run.

Is it realist to ride 11000km in 40 days it all depends where you plan to ride. If you plan to ride some secondary gravel roads in the Andes, no way, it will be very difficult to average well over 200 km a day, and forget go 200 km everyday day over 40 days. Anything can happen to slow you down. Why rush? makes no sense.

What I suggest, is ride for 40 days, I mean take it easy, take it a day at a time, and after 40 days bring your bike back to Tobby for storage, and come back later.

I have been riding in Colombia 6 months a year, and I will be on my forth winter, how many km so far, I have no idea. How many more km, I have no idea. All I know is that Peru awaits me in 2020.

cheers

:thumbup1: on contacting Toby! He's the Peru' guy and best source for a bike you intend to buy, ride then sell.

If you buy in Chile it could easily take a MONTH to get your paperwork ready.
Peru' ? Not sure, but with Toby you bypass all this BS and get riding.
If he is still offering guiding services I would take advantage of this. He knows ALL the best routes and destinations.
(how would you ever find good places on your short visit? USE A GUIDE!)

If I were you I would PAY to extend your return flight. 42 days is really a RUSH trip for area you want to see. Add AT LEAST ... two weeks or longer if you can.

It's not likely you will ever return to S. America so perhaps give yourself a bit more time to learn and enjoy it.

TOBY!!! :D:D:D:D

bier no problem toby, we've all followed you here for 10 years and far as I can tell ... mostly all good reports from folks who have dealt with you, bought your bikes ... and taken your advice.

If I ever make back to Peru' I'd rather rent or buy one of your bikes than ride my own there.

You should run a small AD here on HUBB ... I think it would bring more folks your way ... and most of all, really help the many clueless lost souls who ask weekly here how to get a bike and where to go.

DO IT! :thumbup1: The knowledge you have is valuable! Share it! (and pay yourself too of course!)

@Vochie.
What kind of riding do you want to do? Stick to best around, all paved roads all the time? There are dirt roads with river crossings and landslides, from which you might need to turn back. Or it might just take a day to do 100km. Imagine riding for example in thunderstorms.
Next thing: do you plan your bike not to breakdown? Not to have problems /accidents /flat tires / food poisonings?

Do you want to hike Torres del Paine, or just arrive there and leave the next day?

Along the way you'll find places you want to stay a day or 2 at. You'll find people you feel like spending some time with.
Rushing on panamericana just to say 'I have traveled SA' is the worst possible thing to do.

IMO if you decide to start from Peru, you could do a loop Peru - Bolivia - Atacama bit of Chile - Peru and it will be absolutely amazing. Or just go to Patagonia through Bolivia and sell the bike in Ushuaia.
Central and northern Peru are also super interesting. I found Chachapoyas region to be my favourite. Peruvian drivers are particulary bad, but the roads are breathtaking.

Buying / selling in South America might take ages.

Regarding Macedo Racing - it might be a good option for you, depending on your budget. Huanuco is a nice place to start riding. Lima traffic is insanely aggressive.
(I'm not in any way connected with these guys nor trying to advertise anyone, but I met them and they're cool)

Good luck on your adventure mate.

Thank you everyone for your advice, it is really helpful !

I've contact Toby, and his plan seems too good to be true haha.

I was being foolish to think that everything would go well all the time and that I would be able to do some 8 hours on the bike for a day to be able to relax 3-4 days after.

I still need to be back to Cuzco for the 2nd of March, so now my plan is still to go South, but if I see that making it to Torres Del Paine is impossible well so be it. I'll just have to come back in another trip !

I want to appreciate the journey not just the destination ;)

Again thank you all and have a great day !
