B&B's through Russia (London - Vladivostok)

:helpsmilie:Did have a look around website for this, but didn't get the info.

Just joined Smellybiker - will check out their waypoints when I get a Garmin, but my question is:

I have only 2 months timewise (to include Kaz and Mongolia), want to keep it light, do I need a tent? Or can I hope to B&B it all the way?

Planning ride on KLR650.

heh heh, you won't find many B&Bs in Russia, if by B&B you mean quaint & cozy places to stay with a smiling proprietors. If on the other hand you are just looking for an adequate hotel (in the cities) or a rough & tumble truck stop (along the road) you shouldn't have a problem.

At least as far east as Chita, the major cities in Siberia are generally only a day's ride apart and you and stay in cities (Chita, Ulan Ude, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Omsk, etc.) if you want. If you want to stay along the road there seem to be quite a few truck stops of varying quality.

I have not been east of Chita but imagine that there are truck stops there as well.

damn damn damn - there goes my ideas of a regular smoked salmon and scrambled eggs brekker:frown:

Has anyone tried this though kaz and mongolia? I believe Mongolia is one of the least populated areas? Perhaps I need a monster horn to attract loads of village attention, and hope for some invites::) Hmmm. A tent / bivvy would be less presumptuous (and more sensible). And is 60 days from London a touch Speedy Gonzales?

My advice, if you were hoping for B&Bs and don't want to take a tent, is yes you CAN get away with leaving the tent at home. There are pretty much some sort of cheap hotels at every town you are likely to come across travelling across Russia, KZ and Mongolia.

Learn the following word: "гостиница"

pronounced gass-TIN-itsa (emphasis on the capitals) ... means a hotel, motel, hostel, B&B, guesthouse, pension ... basically anywhere that takes guests overnight.

Thanks guys - I think I'll take the most emergency lightweight sleeping bag / bivvi / jim jams and plan on some eastern hospitality!

If you dont want to take your tent , you can just sleep at truck stops, they are always cheap, clean sometimes have dooshes (showers) or a bunya. Always have food! I spent a few weeks stopping at these places since it was too cold and wet to camp. I had a great time talking and drinking with the local truck drivers at night.

I'm just away to enter Russia tomorrow (hopefully!) from Ukraine. Heading to Moscow then East to Vladivostok via Ulaanbataar.

I plan on the truckstop option too but have the camping kit, and mozzie net, as plan B.

Can't wait ;-)

Well I made it into Russia, no issues at all at the Ukraine/Russia border. Took just under 2hrs and no money exchanged hands at all. Even had one of the Russia officers help fill out my paperwork!! Was expecting complete opposite, love it.

I camped wild last night and got eaten alive in the time it took to set up the tent. Will have to really think about location from now on.... And buy LOADS of mozzie repellant!!

Spending the next few days in Moscow then head east on Friday.

Anyone about?
