Botswana and Namibia
 

Just came from a two week jaunt on bikes through Botswana and Namibia. Can recommend the following:

Nata : the bird sanctuary camp site is 20th before Natalie, approaching from Francistown. Sandy, but clean, lovely setting between trees, ablutions are solar powered so warm water in the act noon, not morning.

Kasane : Thebe river safari has good facilities, very tidy ablutions and if you are lucky, river front sites. Can highly recommend the river safari!

Divundu / Bagane : Popa Falls camping, run by government parks board, clean, separate ablutions for the sites, very good plumbing, nice restaurant, and excellent sundown bush bar overlooking the rapids that the camp area is named after.

Rundu : Ngandu hotel and casino. Don't be fooled by the name, it has a large, grassy camp site with trees and basic ablutions. Very nice feel to the place, the camp sites have concrete tables and benches, thatched shelters and braai facilities.

Swakopmund : Very few affordable places in town. We went to Mile 4, on the northern edge of town along the Henties Bay road. Huge sandy campsite, with demarcated lots. Good ablutions, laundry area, kitchen and sheltered eating area. Can get very crowded in season, but affordable.

Windhoek : Urban camp. Very nice, individual shared ablutions, covered (shaded) paved sites, and secure parking area. The paved sites are a bit hard on your tent, so be sure to lay a ground sheet down to prevent scuff damage to your tent waterproofing.

Buitepos : East Gate Rest camp. The owners are creating a lovely camp area, grassy tent area with braai facilities and very clean ablutions. There are also bungalows if you get tired of your tent and need a soft comfy bed.

Most of these are very affordable, less than 120 ZAR (USD9)

Safety in Namibia
 

Hello,

I am a femaie rider looking to ride and camp in Namibia and Botswana with my husband. I am worried about safety. I understand there is risk no matter where we ride, (these are the days that must happen to you), but would you say you felt safe there? Anything to take into consideration?

What's the safety concerns about? People or wildlife?

Thanks for the reply. I've done some research since I posted the question; if you have any tips in regards to the animals I would appreciate it. Seems like the advice is to sit and wait until they pass/cross the road at a fair distance.

Also, we are considering taking route C44/M74 through from Namibia across the Dobe border crossing into Botswana. Looking for intel on the condition of the road in July/winter season.
