Wild camping in Ireland
 

To all our Irish Brothers.
I'm heading to Ireland in a few weeks so I thought I would try a bit of "Wild" camping - Weather permiting.
So the question is - Is it allowed ?

Hi,

It's one of the grey areas, that there is no specific rules about (that I'm aware of). If your wild camping somewhere really wild and no one can see you, then no one can complain :-)

That said, we dont have much wild land, and probably not near towns / villages where you'd find the nice pubs. Due to the weather (i.e. usually showers on the days with no rain) camping is'nt massive here.

Hostels / hotels have gotten cheaper over the last year or 2 as the tourists numbers are down.

Whar route / areas do you want to hit? Then someone might be able to be more specific.

Only going to be in Ireland for a few (5) days on my way to France and Spain.
I hope to go to the Giants Causeway then go down the West Coast.
I've done plenty of camping but only at campsites, so I thought i'd try a bit of "real" camping.
You know the sort of thing i'm looking for ,

get soaked through the day:freezing:,
set up the tent in a howling gale,:stormy:
supper out of a tin jeiger
and for good measure get eaten alive by midgies in the morning:taz:

That should be fine Rory, people will not report you if you stay out of the way...clean up afterwards and generally are thoughtful to the people and the enviorn.... iv done a good bit of it here... any sand dunes are ideal and provide good protection. i have also had a bit of joy just knocking at a farmers door and asking him if i can set up in a corner of an empty field. you usually get a cup of tea and a good chat out of it aswel!

Sure of course you can.
 

If you see somewhere nice , go for it.......As already said sand dunes are great, Raised turf bogs are also a favourite of mine.......Google Irish Peat bogs, and if there is one on your route you should be able to ride your bike for a couple ov miles into the bog find somewhere nice to pitch up......... If your heading trough East Meath send me a PM and I have a few nice places on my land that you could stay

If you're in the south east,Waterford,Kilkenny there's plenty of room on the farm here too. And some amazing single track roads around the mountains here.

There are many large houses/farm houses with land all around. I knocked on the door and asked. As previously stated, very friendly, chatty, and my thermos was filled with hot water and camp over there, hand gesture, covering a large area :thumbup1:
