whats the best route planner other then crappy google maps??

greetings people,as the title says,im looking for a program online that would allow me to plan a route without wanting to smash my computer off a walljeiger

something with a bit more detail and freedom,im sure serious globetrotters use something better adjusted for the extreme routes then google maps and the likes?

regards

Hummm
I really don't know what an 'extreme' route is. For some, it is a long one, for others, it includes crossing fields and/or streams / rivers or climbing mountains etc. or just going to the supermarket locally which can also be testing at times!

Come to think of it, I've no idea what a 'serious' globetrotter is- I tend to prefer those who smile, can cook, fix things, are friendly, who laugh and not take themselves too seriously!

Mapping options are many, whether you use Android, Garmin, TomTom etc
  • OSM maps are free
  • Garmin maps are available for many countries of the world- Look up their website
  • Google Earth can be also used as can Google Maps
  • and so on and so on
Have you searched and read this section?

please tell me you have before posting...

Funny how things change. I remember planning trips years ago where you'd be lucky to get an old outdated paper map.

Those were the days- still are! but I still prefer these for on the move- MUCH easier to follow when riding than holding a map!!!

Why do you want the detail?

You plan in very broad terms a long trip. For instance you might be interested in scenery and thus try to visit the UN listed things. So you put them up and get an idea of how to go from A to B .. As you go you take side trips .. as what and who you meet adds detail.

How far is it from A to B and how long will it take? Take the map generated distance A to B .. and 50% at least for side trips. Take daily distances as 400km and every 7th day off the bike. Add a few days sight seeing at each place you want to stop and a few days getting visas for the next country .. there is your plan .. in broad terms.

I found the Garmin Basecamp software to be very useful in planning the rough route. It will work out the mileages for each section which is useful.
