USA visa
 

Can anybody tell me?If as an Austalian citizen,if i want to ride from Mexico into the USA,do i first need to apply for a tourist/transit visa or will they sell me one on the border?And dido for US into Canada.
I´ve always just thought it possible to travel to these places with an Aussie passport but someone told me very recently that all the rules have changed.Is this true?
I am trying to contact consulates etc now to get current info but if anybody knows the drill first hand your input would be great.:mchappy:

You do not need an extended visa unless you are planning on staying in the US for longer than three months. I needed one for 6 months and it is an expensive process.


If you have the new electronic chip embedded passport, you just apply online for a visa using the Visa Waiver Program or VWP. Then you enter the border area and Home Security will either let you in or not :) Don't forget drugs are a major shipment from the south, so they will do a full search.

Once in the states, for example with the VWP, then you have 3 months total travel. Entering Canada or Mexico again is NOT accepted to come back into the country and extend the VWP, you must actually enter another country other than these two to re-enter and extend you travels. A side trip to Cuba or the West Indies is a good start.


I hope that last part makes sense.


I had a 6 month visa and when I re -enter the USA in February I hope they let me in, but if they do I will have a maximum of 3 months or reapply for an extended 6 month one again, with the added cost.

We have a US Visa and when we went up to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in '08 we did as we were told (as it's on the back of the card) and gave up our 'white card' that the nice immigration officer at the airport gave us, much to the amusement of the Canadian immigration officer. When we came back down from NS etc. the US immigration office said, "where's your white card", we said, "we gave it up at this border a month ago" and explained what we'd done in accordance to what's on the back of the card. The immigration then said that we'd have to get a new one and we had to fill out new forms and answer a few questions (seperately). This done they stamped our passports, gave us another 6 months and wished us well, very helplful, very friendly, no trouble at all. Just don't be cheeky or try to be clever, tell the truth and smile a lot, it usually works.
