Unsealed Norway
Hi,
Myself and two mates are in the early planning stages of a trip to Norway. We are planning (roughly) to ride from Bergen to the Lofoten Islands. We'd like to ride some lesser travelled roads and tracks and I was wondering if anyone might let us in on some secret spots! Any hints, tips and suggestions gratefully recieved! Matt |
Hi, we have been in Norway several times, and I must admit, there are no real secret places left, anyway there are a lot of beautiful places to go.
The standard interesting things and roads are Lysebotn, Kjerak, Preikestolen, Lofthus and Kinsarvik are very nice, Briksdalsbreen near Oldevatn, Geiranger, Trollstiegen, Jotunheimen National park, The Lofoten are beautiful as well, take enough time. If u want to do the Nordkap, remember that u have to pay a lot to get on it and it is not even the most northern point, which is a nice 9 km one way hike starting just south of the rock. Have fun, norway is great. Martin |
Thats great, somewhere to start looking at the maps from!

Also, check out the Norwegian Off-Road Touring Club's web site http://www.otc-mc.org/english/. They are a helpful bunch, and might offer some pearls of route alternatives.
Have a great trip! |
Thanks for that link. The club have been very helpful and given me some GPS roadbooks to look at, great stuff!

Hi Matt,
Are you still on to Norway. If yes, when do you expect to be there? I'll be there end of July, so we may have a drink and trade some tips :-) Take care, Momirj |
Hi Momirj,
We plan to arrive in Kristiansand on the 29th of July, is this too late to meet up for beers? I'll post again nearer the time to confirm our plans. matt |
Hi
My wife and I are planning a Norway trip this year in August. Its looking like a road bike trip at the moment but we could be tempted to bring our XTs. What are the access restrictions to unsealed rads in Norway and what is the best ferry route bearing we are soft southereners> Any advice greatfully recived Charlie & Siobhan |
Hi,
There appears to be lots of unsealed roads in norway, in many cases, I think they are 'private' but you just pay nominal toll and go. They seem a lot more relaxed about motorised access than us brits but that probably comes from a greater national respect and more responsible use of their wilderness than we have (been there walking and skiing and theres none of the rubbish you see dumped in the UK wilderness sometimes). We are mixing it up, a tour on roads up to the Lofoten followed by some gravel roading on the way South (thats the plan at the moment anyway!). With speed limits on many roads of 80km/h you may not find touring on the XTs too bad. matt |
There are a lot of unsealed roads in Norway but to find them you need a good map (most of them are on City Select if you use Garmin).
Some of the roads are private but as long as they are not closed it’s okay to go there, from time to time you have to pay toll but on a bike you should not pay more then 50%. I just came back from a trip from Oslo to Roros and back, almost 800 kilometers on mostly unsealed roads. |
