Unimog around Morocco
 

Hi There,
Not on a bike - sorry but a 4x4.

Can anyone help me. I am planning my summer hols (3weeks) and would like to cruise around Morocco but can't find a good source of routes.
The vehicle is pretty capable (certainly more capable than the driver) so i can definately go off the beaten track if only i could find some suggestions.
Any help with route planning in Morocco would be great.

Get a copy of Chris Scotts book "Sahara Overland". It is invaluable for planning a trip through morocco. It has some great route suggestions as well, all with easy to follow directions & GPS waypoints. Route M6 was my favourite.

The best resource I've come across on the net for routes in Morocco is the Voyages 4x4 website:

GPS data for all routes and desriptions are given for the routes, and some good pictures.

Another vote for the Chris Scott book - a must read, not only for the routes, but for all the other valuable information on Sahara travel in general.

Another option is to try and get hold of the Jaques Gandini guides. They're not available in the UK as far as I know, but if you do a Google you come up with a couple of French stores who'll send to the UK. A bit expensive though by the time you've paid shipping.

My first piece of advice is that you really don't need a Unimog in Morocco.
The locals all go around in 30yo Renault 18s.

Don't bother with the West coast, flat and featureless.
If you're crossing to Cueta or Algiers head straight for Chefchouen in the Rif mountains, from there head south toward Fez, then keep heading South into the Atlas mountains.

The locals are friendly and very helpful, you can use your bank card in the cashpoints in towns.
Accomodation is readily available and cheap, food is good, ask the waiter for a recommendation and you won't be disappointed.
