Uk - Turkey

Me and my wife have decided that next years holiday can be my holiday, so we're planning to go two up on my DL650 V-Strom. I've decided we'll travel to Istanbul but would really like some advice on the route, costs, places to avoid and time it will take. We plan on camping all the way to keep the cost down and we don't want to be on the bike riding first thing in the morning until last thing at night. Any help in planning this trip will be greatly received.

I rode from Bristol to Istanbul last August/September. If you have half as good a time as I did, you'll have a ball. Click on my link below for details.

You may have already realised it, but few people are likely to see your post on a thread titled "UK-Turkey" : It needs to be in a thread of its own or as a reply to a related existing thread.

I did UK-Turkey a few years ago and went down through the Balkans, fantastic route - make sure you visit Lake Ohrid, I wasn't planning on going anywhere near it but got a bit lost, very glad I did, you'll see why when you get there.

My total route (as far as Turkey) went UK-FR -IT - Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia/Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania, possibly Macedonia (was a bit lost) Greece, Turkey. Awesome time, great people, interesting roads.

A few suggestions for those who wish to travel through Turkey:

- Come directly to Istanbul via Greece or Bulgaria.

- Or, take a ferry and arrive at Cesme which is close to Izmir, my hometown, so that we can share some beers and discuss before you hit the road in the country.

1- Istanbul (never miss out)

2- All the way down from Istanbul down to Antalya either via Troy, Assos, Pergamon to Izmir or via Bursa, Bandirma, Gonen, Balya, Ivrindi, Allianoi, Pergamon, to Izmir and regions.

3- Two options from Izmir:
Ephesus - Priene - Denizli (Hierapolis) - Konya - Cappadocia

or

4- Ephesus - Priene - Heracleia (Bafa lake) - Bodrum (via ferry) Datca - Marmaris - Elmali - Antalya

5- Antalya - Mersin by the seashore (for motorcycling fun with curves and curves. It takes more than you expect and you either lve it or hate it)

6- Mount Nemrut - Adiyaman

7- Zeugma, Harran and Mesopotamia

7- Antakya (Antioch) - and even a daily trip to Halep (Aleppo) in Syria

8- Van lake and regions

9- Dogubeyazit / Ishakpasa palace

10- Black sea and inland Turkey: see Ride to Blacksea Coast of Turkey - Report - ADVrider

11- Safranbolu (near Kastamonu) and Devrek if you can make it

12- Places like Iznik (Nicosea) and Goynuk (near Bilecik city for being far from the madding touristic crowd and hot weather in june/july.)

- Finish either in Istanbul and take the road via Greece or Bulgaria.

- Or finish in Izmir, Bodrum, or Marmaris to take a ferry either to Greece or Italy (from Cesme, Izmir)

... and cold beer in Izmir if you happen to pass by. Send PM for possible routes and details. I know it is a little bit of confusing to connect these points but not impossible.

Enjoy.

Hi Mike,
I second a run down to Istanbul, fantastic place.
Then Ancara and Marmaris before you return.
There are more than a few UK registered bikes, cars, and motorhomes in Marmaris.

My wife and I are doing a trip in three weeks from UK to Turkey and back, two up on a DL650. Will let you know how it goes as should be pretty relevant!

How long are you going for? We are looping down from hook of Holland and going Germany, Czech Rep., Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, France, UK.

Reckon it will be 7 or 8 weeks with some long days, but plenty of time at main points of interest.

What we have picked up so far aside from the obvious is Transfaragan (sp) Road in Romania, Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria, Lake Ohrid as was already mentioned, Kotor in Montenegro and Plitvice National Park in .

Any other pointers would be welcome and shared!

Hi, we are also heading to Turkey, leaving Scotland 12th June and heading across Germany, Czech, slovakia, Hungary, Romania (Transalpina) , Moldova, Ukraine, Russia , Turkey. Travelling on back roads and trails as much as possible. remember and watch your speed in Turkey.

cozcan 20 May 2009 12:50

Never hesitate to send a PM or contact for anything you might need while you are travelling through Turkey. I am in Izmir and I am used hosting many HU riders.

We might also meet somewhere/anywhere on the road for I will also be riding through the whole country in late June and July.

Safe rides

Anyone travelling down to Istanbul, and looking for places to camp. We are about 30 minutes from the Turkish border at Kapitan Andreevo, just inside Bulgaria. We have good, clean showers and toilets, and lots of hot water.
Look us up on Sakar Hills Camping
