same trip, same questions....

Hi Ted,

My boyfriend and me are planning our Amsterdam-Tasmania trip for august 2010. I am now in the middle of planning the trip and probably it will be:
The Netherlands - Belgium- luxembourg- france- italy - greece- turkey - iran - pakistan - india............thailand - malaysia- indonesia - australia.
What I found till now is that China is much to expensive, Birma seems to be a problem and the're almost no boats in the andaman sea. But I've not given up yet on the part not to fly.
* you can take a boat to the andaman islands (india) and take the risk of finding a fisherboat or something there which takes you to thailand
* i found a german couple who did go into birma so it's still worthwile finding out (Auf Weltreise-online - Live Bericht von einer Reise um den Globus ohne geplante Rückreise)
* i am now thinking about the option of shipping the bikes from india to thailand and go overland....busses etc, through china to thailand

i am really curious if there are other people having experiences on the options i named.

Well anyway, planning is half the fun!! :palm:

Jeez like guys, looks like there's gonna be an overland convoy next march!

The Yahoo's are also planning to go U.K.- OZ march 2009.
(Should we make it a massive HU rideout?)

We'll be going: France-belguim-germany-check rep-slovakia-ukraine-russia-kazakhstan-kyrgyzstan-tajikistan-kyrgyzstan-china (hopefully!)-pakistan-india-dunno, still weighing up the options after that.

Anybody know of anyone who's crossed from tajikistan to pakistan through the wakhan corridor? looks very mountanous and I cant see any roads through it.

Europe to Sth Africa via the Middle East, maybe????

I' ve just purchased a Wee strom and am thinking of doing Europe. But having said that, if i plan to do a long trip, I think another way would be through Turkey and then down through Syria, Jordan to Sth Africa and then ship or fly the bike home from Durban/Joburg.
Something totally different to the normal UK-Oz trip.

we are doing the same route

Hi There,

We have been doing some route planning over the last few years and researched pretty much every route possible. It all depends on how close you want to get to Australia before getting on a boat and plane. By far the cheapest route we could find overland was to basically enter Russia and end up in Vlad on the east coast and then go via Japan. It is however there are some sacrifices you need to make on that route. Its difficult to get a more than two entry into Russia visa. If that's not a problem then you can go into Kazakhstan and Mongolia very easily. If your after more excitement head lower through Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, Russia, Japan, Australia. If your on motorcycles or cars you can use kiwicar from Japan to Australia which offer some pretty good rates. The problems we have found with this route is that there are lots of visa's and you need to have a "Guide" in Turkmenistan if your on a tourist visa.

If you have already forked out for a 500% Carne then your trip is not really going to be "cheap" but you can go Turkey -> Iran -> Pakistan -> India -> Australia and in theory this may save you the Visa's through Central Asia while still having a fantastic route with loads to see and many different cultures.

Regards,

Jimmy.

Hi Yahoo,

I was trying to find a route through using the Pamir's then wakhan corridor but ended up giving up. It seemed that it was very difficult to obtain the permits, There are routes through that area you can see them in some detail using the maps on ViaMichelin: Maps, route planner, route finder, UK maps, European maps, hotel booking, travel guides

The one constant piece of information I found when researching this route was that it seems the biggest safety issue was "land mines, land mines and land mines".. not sure how exagerated the stories are but it was a very common theme.

Regards,

Jimmy.
