how long- without the ususal tourist stops, travelling for around eight hours a day overland on scooters, would it take to go from the UK to sotuh africa via the middle east? roughly?

You can do it easily in under three months. It took me that long going the other way, and that included a hike up Kilimanjaro and a trip over to Zanzibar. Wrote a book about it, see "Books" section, "Africa Against the Clock on a Motorcycle."
