UK to Australia on a 'Wing or LT- info needed!
 

Hi guys, been reading your posts with interest but decided to post my own question as I havent found exactly what I've been looking for yet- forgive me if this has already been asked and my search skills are poor.

I'm planning a trip to Sydney from the UK in the not too distant future, and given that the trip can be done by bus/coach, I'm assuming that you would'nt need an off road bike to do it either (GS/Africa twins etc).

Given that the wife doesn't ride, would it be possible to do the trip on something like a wing or an LT?

Absolutely; no reason why you can't do the trip on those bikes. It is road all the way, and only in Pakistan and India will you find roads which are truly bad on main routes. Then, you just slow right down along with everyone else and pick your way around the holes.

The dirt road stuff is optional.

The only drawback with those bike suggestions is that they are a bit too nice. An old one, with its share of scratches, sure. But that's up to you and your budget I guess.

Yes. You might find things more comfortable on a GS .. but an LT or Wing will do it.

Read the Forwoods (sp?) blog - left side bar "BLOGS" .. "Travellers Stories" ... they are doing it on a HD..

Great stuff, thanks for the info- had a good read of the blog, theres a photo of a bloke doing a round the world trip on a fireblade, so i guess its all good!

Probably do-able, but the bike might not look exactly new after the trip, so if its an expensive one, its price may come down quite a bit. There are also big speed bumps in many countries, where a grand tourer might not be the most perfect choice...

Another thing to keep in mind is, when talking about an expensive bike: can you get insurance that will cover in all countries you´re going to visit? I dont mean just the compulsory 3rd party insurance, but what if something happens to the bike, or its stolen or whatever... if theres no insurance thats valid in those countries, then its all your own risk. Although I tried to, I could not find any company, that would´ve covered my bike for Pakistan, India, Thailand, Malaysia or Indonesia, so I had no insurance whatsoever in those countries. For Thailand and Australia I took the compulsory 3rd party, but still that wouldnt have covered the bike itself at all.
