Travelling Europe, when?

Hi all,

trying to fix a start date, will be entering france from uk across the channel.
wanna see spain, portugal, italy austria, germany, czech, everywhere really.main attraction is the alps and this is my worry cus i gotta hit them at the right time of year.
If i know this i can plan the trip accordingly.
Anyone whos done europe ur help would be appreciated.
Also whats the average budget for spending on a daily basis.I run a bmw dakar and am taking the missus. alot of the time we`d be using digs with real beds, aaah

Hi Preeny
Just got back from a trip to the Alps/Dolomites region yesterday.Try to avoid anytime later than the middle of September as the weather seems to take a turn for the worst about then(rain, temps dropping fast and snow closing some of the passes). Also August seems to be French national holiday time, and i found about half of the hotels/eating places closed with signs saying "back in September" on the doors.
Expect thousands of German,Austrian,Swiss and Dutch bikers storming the passes and a very welcoming atmosphere in the hotels and cafe/restraunts(more than you'll ever get in UK).Hell,us bikers are practically the second ski-season for the hotelliers! I stayed in some fantastic places, excellent food, company and value for money.Austria and Slovenia did it for me though out of all of them, especially the latter.Really want to go back there.
If you are looking for high passes,go for the Stelvio pass at 2757m,and visit the Bradwurst seller at the top in the funny hat! Oh and watch out for mad Italian cyclists coming down again, trying to go for the speed record.....

Just going for a short ride on my bike....

For some reason late summer seems to be the best time to go to most places in europe. Generally more settled than earlier on. This could of course be cobblers as it is based on my own experience and not through any real statistical analysis...

Oh and I second Slovenia as a destination of choice!

More Yorkies eh??
I'm from Sheffield & I regularly ride thru France N Spain. Gotta be done during Summer as many mountain passes in the Alps get closed October thru to April.
