Touring in Romania

Planning to ship bikes out to Budapest and ride into Romania at end of July 2018. Idea is to spend about 7 days riding in Romania doing a circuit around the usual places and including Transfargassan Highway. I realise that temps will be high in the lower areas but hopefully dropping off a bit in the mountains. Any one done this trip recently? Any tips?
Thanks :thumbup1:

Did it last year in a rental car. Watch out for closures on the Transfagarasan, apparently there have been landslides?

Look at the Transalpina as well, and the other national park roads. E.g. the most fun drive I had was Route 58 and 57B through Semenic - Cheile Carasului National Park, it's as twisty and bendy as the alpine roads, but almost no traffic.

Spent some time in Cluj-Napoca and Brasov (close to Bran Castle), both very awesome cities. Check out the Turda Salt Mine if you can.

Bit like the Wild Atlantic Way now if you like being stuck behind Camper Vans, Tour Buses and general tourist traffic!! :helpsmilie:

I rode the Transfargasan on a sunday the first or second sunday of August 3 years ago. The road was totally packed and it was almost impossible to find parking for even a motorbike near the top. It was actually not fun at all. So its definetively better to try to go on a time its less traffic there and avoid the massive crowds.

If you're doing a circuit, let's start in the north: Sapânta has a very funny graveyard. Viseu de Sus has a beautiful narrow-gauge railway, partly using steam engines. The track goes far into the dark forests near the Ukrainian border. The mountain pass east of Borsa is nice to drive. At Cârlibaba take the dirt road north, which leads to the so-called forest monastries, beginning with Putna. They are a real must-see with all the biblical paintings inside and outside.
South from here is the town of Brasov with a nice old city and nearby Bran, with its Castle. Not far away is the above mentioned Transfagaras. Don't miss Sibiu, Sigisoara and the fortified church in Biertan.
The south-western part has large forests, a beautiful road is along the Danube from Drobeta-Turnu westwards past the famous Iron Gates canyon (see Wikipedia).
