time to make it to cape town???
 

hey every1, im thinking of planning a trip around september time this year and want to ride down to africa from yorkshire u.k... only thing is i have to do it around work... they have told me that i can have 4 weeks off in september... this is goin to be my first big trip and im not sure on what sort of time scale it may take to get there and back... ie, could i make it to cape town and back without rushing ect.... any advise on time scales or any other tips you can think of would be much appreciated... cheers eagles.

I'd always thought around 4 months was reasonable. One way though.

For only 4 weeks, you'd be better off taking a good trip to Morocco etc perhaps.

If your still looking at the Cape town jaunt, then 12 weeks is OK, but you will miss things.:oops2:
Any thing less than 12 weeks (3 months) is a waste of money.

Well, he wouldn't let me 're-start', and he kept me away from work for about 3 weeks, as a 'punishment':oops2:
But who the hell cares, We had a great time in Cape Town.:clap::clap::clap:

Just go for it.
Worry about the consequences when you get back.

Trans-Africa as your first big trip sounds a bit challenging...

But even if you had all the experience in the world, 4 weeks is not enough. Africa is BIG. My experiences of it are only limited to the southernmost countries, but just to see, say, South Africa & Namibia, 4 weeks would barely be enough. And I havent been further north from Zambia, but I think the roads & border crossings will get much, much more exciting (read: tough, and very slow), the closer you get to the equator.

Like others said, 4 weeks would be good for taking a small peek, and getting a first taste of Africa.
