Is is now pssible to get through Sudan?

I hope it is because I just applyed for my visa in London. I have heard of many people riding through from Egypt and even from Ethiopia; and I know of a couple trying to get to Sudan from Chad on a 4x4. I'll have the answer about my visa in about 3 weeks and then I let you know.
Cheers

Hi,

I crossed Sudan, entering from El Germinia on the Chad border in a truck in March, got the Visa in Abuja in Nigeria, 3 days to process money & Visa stuff at border, crossed to Khartoum, without much hassle. we did give lifts to Police & Army , to help us through checkpoints, the route is a bit hard to follow and lots off punctures (thorns)
Have fun

The Chad->Sudan route sounds really interesting. Has anyone else done this route? I just read in on the lonely planet site that it is very dangerous to travel overland to Sudan, not to mention from Chad. Is this paranoia, or are they refering to the turbulent southern Sudan.
They also mentioned that it is very time consuming if not impossible to get the necessary permits to cross from Chad to Sudan.
Any info on the chad->Sudan stretch is of interest.

I was in Sudan in April 2000. Northern Sudan I would consider quite safe, much safer than Kenya. The people there had an outstanding hospitality.

I took the ferry to Wadi Halfa and went along the Nile to Khartoum and to Gedaref, then Ethiopia.

Ciao,
Krid
