Hello Matt

I stayed at the Sovetskaya last year. Good price, decent location, very 'Soviet' style hotel in a changing city. It also happens to be where I lost my virginity 25 years ago.. I almost cried when I did the calculation.. but not to a tall Russian blonde.

Park next to the car park guards' post (outside, but 100% secure), avoid the breakfast.. and the tall Russian blondes.

Genius - thanks Mike - glad to see that the rain isn't just confined to the UK right now. I got soaked to the skin in Spain on the way back from Morocco - the only time it actually rained on my journey!

Martyn - I'm sure I don't know what you mean! ;-)

Matt, I stayed about 5 days in St Petersburg (Central area inside the bridges) whilst travelling in Russia, I would recommend an apartment from Alexi -Very honest and helpful, the apartments are excellent and central and far cheaper than Hotels. Look at his site Vacation Rentals, rent apartment in St. Petersburg, Russia Apartments for rent look at the section What the clients say a few motorcyclist including ourselves have stayed with Alexi. When I am back in that part of Russia I would not hesitate to stay with his company. Jake. (Brad and Helen)

Hello Matt,

I stayed at the Nevsky 22 hotel and can recommend It. It is just off the Nevsky prospect and well located for getting around the city. There is a 24hr guarded secure park around 400 yards up from the hotel which is a must! I Cant remember how much that cost but the hotel was cheep and very good for Russian standards. I Think the hotel was around £30 per night with breakfast. There are also some very nice Russian birds working there but of course I was not looking when the wife was with me! :innocent:
Hope that might help you a bit.

Cheers Gav.

I know that when I was looking for accomodation in cities in Russia and very much so st petersburg there are two prices (the russian price ) and the advertised price for westerners. Also most of the rooms are sold through agencies who block book for the tourist industry from the west and states. I could not figure a way around this system - other than turning up and trying to get agood rate for cash (Dollars) so as I mentioned above if pre booking it was easier to book an appartment. Mind you if you can get a hotel off nevsky prospect for £30.00 that is one hell of a deal in the centre of st petersburg.

Mototmgav 28 Jan 2008 20:20

Hi Brittman
I booked it through expedi.com
At the time they had a special offer on for 4 nights accommodation, I thought it was £30 to £35 but I have just looked at the old receipt and it worked out at £45 per night. Sorry for the mistake.:oops2: Mind it was still bl*@dy cheep! When I went on there web site they advertised it at £90 per night for mid April 2006. Give it a try but if you do find a good deal book it quick because they don`t last long! Like Jake said apartments are a good option. I looked into that but when I found that deal I booked up straight away! Didn't look too closely into any other options after that. If you can I would book up before hand. I know its not always possible but with the duel pricing ect... I think you would struggle to find something cheap without speaking good Russian. Hope that might help. I know expedi and sites like that was the last place I thought I would get good prices but it paid off for me at the time.:thumbup1:

Cheers Gav.

P.S Jake I see your in Northumberland. If your ever around the Chatton area there`s always a cup of tea here!

Jake 28 Jan 2008 20:39

matt re secure parking in st petersburg I had a hell of a job getting the bike into a secure car park - the bike was a bike not a car and in the russian car park managers beaurocratic mindset only a car could go in a car park ! I offered to pay cash Dollars then double rate ($10.00) 24hrs still not a chance and I had a russian -Alexi from the apartment trying to smooth the way. In the end Alexi offered to let us put the bike in the flat it would not fit so let us put the bike in the basement of the flats where it was secured to a radiator behind steel doors- After riding it down some stairs into the basement area - a right job. So it stayed ther for our entire stay.
