Southern Italy advice

Hi all,

Me and my mate are arriving in Bari on the 27th of this month and looking for some suggestions on the south of Italy. We would like to make it to Sicily to have a look around there, and the Almalfi coast. Any suggested routes, things not to miss down there? We've heard from some people to avoid the south of Italy because "it's mainly industrial" and because of the crime - any truth to these?? We've both done the touristy things in the north (Rome, Venice, Florence, Cinque Terra) in a previous life so tempted to check out the south.

Any advice or tips greatly appreciated!

Regards ,

Dave

Brindisi

Not terribly helpful...but still causes my friends to roll on the floor laughing......I swam in the sea north of Brindisi a few years ago and came out to find everything nicked except my boots........Stood there in Speedos and big boots and ....sort of screamed! Cutting a long story short....loads of help from locals and Police....although almost locked in the cells when Police shift changed and I had gone to a cell to use the toilet......but...many people then said...Be extra careful in the south.....but frankly, wherever you go ....a pillock like me leaving everything in a tidy pinchable heap and swimming out to sea is taking quite a risk!!
That apart...plenty of lovely towns and villages in that area to enjoy...Trulli stone cone houses etc...

Southern Italy

Greets from Milan,

I suppose you arrive to Brindisi from Greece :-)
You have mentioned so many places and frankly worh of a visit but it takes a long time. I should follow the national road from Brindisi to Bari, stopping in Polignano a Mare, than visiting Bari thand heading to Gargano from Gargano national road Foggia Potenza you arrive to the Tirrenian Sea Maratea than going up visiting Paestum, Pollica and Amalfi Coast. Concerns about safety travel at your own risk if you have Rolex, Gucci clothes or similar but I do no really think is your situation, you are not crusing with luxury ships

Ciao :-)

When travelling westwards from Bari don't miss the Castel del Monte in the Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia, near Andria. Awesome!

Away from the coast the country is very mountainous, with lots of curvy roads, esp. the smaller roads. Very enjoyable!
