Sao Paulo to Cusco by car. Which route?

Hi all,

We want to drive from Sao Paulo (Brazil) to Cusco (Peru). We have Brazilian license plates and insurance covering all of South America. We were wondering if anyone has done a similar trip and can recommend a good route for us.

Google Maps suggests three routes: First, the direct route via Corumba. This is the shortest, but we worry about the road condition in Pantanal and Eastern Bolivia. Second, a route via Paraguay. Third, a route via Argentina.

Has anyone done a similar trip and can give us some details on road conditions, timing, borders (which ones are nice, which ones aren't), etc.? On the way to Cusco, we'd like to travel fast. On the way back, we are happy to take a more scenic route with some places to stop on the side.

Thanks so much!
hanshelm

PS: we have overlanding experience, but we don't have a 4x4 this time, so we are looking for a pleasant drive.

Interoceanica Sur

About 50 km's SW of Cusco, on the road that goes to Puno (3S), there is a town called Urcos. I took the road that goes from Urcos to Puerto Maldonado (30C) and they call it the Interoceanica. When you first get on the road at Urcos there is a sign giving distances to various towns. One of them was Sao Paulo, 4207 km's, or something like that. Definitely over 4000. Do some research on that road because I think it has been completed. I'll be taking it in August on a motorcycle but that will probably be too late for you. Hope this helps.
