Salar de Uyuni

I am about to head from Salta to the Salar via San Pedro de Acatama.

Does anyone have any helpful hints regarding the availability of fuel and water and the condition of the 'roads' at this time of year.

All info (including GPS waypoints) gratefully received.

Cheers.

We did this about a year ago.
For this area of Bolivia the rainy season has already started so you may not be able to cross the salar. We crossed it with about 10 cms of water in some parts and we had to drive 30 kms/h because of the amount of water.
All this salty water is very bad for the bikes so we spent some time cleaning them, for me it was the best experience of the whole 9 months trip.

We did this trip in march, 2002, coming from San Pedro de Atacama crossing into Bolivia via Ollague. It was right at the end of the rainy season. Petrol in small quantity available at the "chief of town" of Ollague. There was still some water on the Salar de Uyuni, partly up to 30 cm. Anyway, we made it, happyly cruising on mainly dry parts of the salt-lake.
