RTW Route Planning Issue (Carnet)

2 Attachment(s)
Hello All,

So, me and my wife are heading on a two year trip and we are leaving in May 2016.

we are leaving from Ireland and heading into Scandinavia and then Russia and then down to Thailand. on the way back we will head towards Greece and then up to Ireland.

The big issue is that we cant pass trough China to get to Thailand, and a few country's require Carnets. basically this make the route very hard without a Carnet.

A carnet will cost about 4,000 + and this is not an option due to budget.

Does anybody know of any options to make this route possible? or is it possible to get a fake carnet ?

any info at all is more then welcome !
Any questions just ask :)

Thanks All ! :)

The lower map is out of date... no carnet required in South America.

You can do Russia return without a carnet. Then ...

Alternatives?

a) buy a bike in each carnet country and sell it as you leave. Good for India. And some other parts of southern Asia.

b) pay for the carnet through an insurance thingy .. you will still pay .. but a lot less initially. No money back at the end though so at the end more expensive. And if you fail to complete the carnet the insurance company will come after you for their costs.

--------------------
No one here will encourage you to use a fake carnet. Risk? Confiscation of the bike + jail ... you do not want to go to jail? In Asia? And maybe flogging too in some countries... Don't even consider it.

------------------------
You have considered costs of transporting yourselves + bike? Think that will add up too!

Are you sure that is actually the cost, not the bond that you should get back after the trip once your vehicle is back home? What is your vehicle, and its estimate value? And the carnet would be issued by who?

4000+ does sound a bit steep, and the whole thing is going through a major change right now, changes may include pricing as well.

The carnet cost about 500€ but the bond is 4000 +

Even though you get the bond back after the trip we still can't afford to put away that money.

I have not contacted any company that issues carnets but I'm estimating my bike to cost 4K from what I have read on the web, other bikes usually cost 4K -12k
My bike is a 89 Honda Africa Twin 650

We have looked at doing Russia and then shipping from Vladivostok to South Korea, but can't find any way to get to South Korea to Thailand or near to Thailand , only by flying Witch will cost a lot. Then when we get to Thailand how do we pass India-Pakistan etc

It's looking impossible without carnet..

Ok so looks like I will need to get a official Carnet.
Does anyone have information on where to get one ? From what I've read the most popular is ADAC in Germany. Only other option I could see is the RAC in UK but they are shutting down the business the end of this month ...

The RCA carnet was working out about €2,500 and the ADAC is costing €5,000. It would be great if there was another option other than the ADAC, can anybody help ? Thanks

ADAC is 200 something and 3000 deposit.
I think ADAC is the best option.
