Route planning software

Hi, is anyone aware of a route planning software that covers the world. It should ideally be easy to simply put in names of cities (in some remote countries) and then calculate the distances etc. Any software that essentially would let a rider chart out a road map of where to go.

The problem with Google Earth is that it doesn't give me enough details of cities and sights in remote countries (unless i'm not using it right, thats what i felt).

Thanks.

Google Maps tends to have a little more detail than Earth sometimes,

Also try using Mapsource from Garmin with the appropriate maps loaded. You should be able to build your routes from there.

Google Maps

I would have to agree with Silky, Google Maps is the best online source out there at the moment. I use Google Maps all the time for working out distances and best routes.

There's a lot of useful things you can do with Google Maps as well, "Get Directions" (Multiple locations). "My Maps" Save and store routes. etc.

The best thing is you don't need a progam for it, as long as you have internet access you can just go to google and click on maps. :thumbup1:

I have'nt seen anything that can beat it!

I also vote for Google Maps. The nice thing is that you can always convert your file so that Mapsource (if you are running it) can open which you can then upload to your GPS (if you are using one).:scooter:

That's interesting. How do you convert a google route into a mapsource file?

I find a good way to vaguely work out distance (should you require it) is to type

"As the crow flies distance calculater"

into google - Helped me out quit a bit when working out my Turkey trip. :thumbup1:
