Road from Lima to Cuzco

From the map I bought it looks like it's trail all the way.

I will be there around June, coming down from Colombia/Ecuador and heading straight to Cuzco.
Has anyone done this road recently? It is trail (as it shows in my map) or paved? Is it safe?

Any info on this would be helpful.
Cheers,

Kinda depends on which way you're going. You could do it on paved all the way - Lima, Nasca, Abancay, Cusco.

Be a bit careful in the highlands near Abancay - other than that its safe.

Hi Maria,
Searched, and found this:-

I took the Nazca (Lines)/Chalhuanca route in 2005 - all paved, blown sand on road north of Nazca, very cold crossing the Andes - 4000+ metres.

Best wishes Alec

Nasca - Abancay - Cusco

Hola Maria

In the map it looked like a fair detour to go down to Nazca then up to Cuzco but might be the best option. All the reports /blogs I read (and I read a lot in the last 3 years) seem to go via Nazca...

Thanks for the info guys!

Maria, just for planning if going that way, that route Nasca-Cusco looks doable in a day, but its further than it looks, think two days- then you can enjoy it! 2 passes over 4000m, accommodation limited. Great route, but its' longer than it looks. Enjoy! enjoy the memories over a pint in Norton Rats when you get there ;-)

Road via Huancayo and Ayacucho

Thanks guys.

What I had in mind was the road via Huancayo and Ayacucho. It looks paved from Lima to there , but after it's described as dirt road all the way to Cuzco. Anyone has done that road recently? Is it doable?

Fritz, I saw your presentation in June in Derby. Very good! I spent half an hour after that with my hubby quizzing you 2 with millions of questions! Thanks for your patience!
