Q about time for those after their trip
 

Hey all,

I'm trying to plan my route for a two(ish) year rtw trip and it seems it needs to be based on two factors. The weather & how long countries / regions will take.

Weather I can research. The time however? I understand this will be a subjective question, but any info is greatly appreciated so,

Can you gurus give me a rough idea of how long regions take? West coast of Africa, Western Europe, Russia, North America, South America, the 'stans for example.

Obviously everyones speed is different, but an idea on how long I could expect to take in these general regions will REALLY help towards planning the route once weather is thrown in the mix.

Ha! Good call. But that all depends if there's surf at your current location no?

Spent the last three days trying to work out a good route. Considering just heading off and working it out on the road.

That actually depends on the roads, the terrain and you. In europe or say northern america where you might want to pass through 400 MILES is ok, and not really excessive, but if you are off the beaten track in say India 200 KM can be hard going!

Crossing Germany on an Auto barn the distance melts in front of you. Crossing Mongolia on the rough it's not the same. So I would say It depends what you want to see, or whiz by AND the state of the roads!

Try driving in Mumbai in the rush hour.... I have in a car... and that was how can I put it..... "interesting"! :helpsmilie: :eek3:

Thanks Brendan, I think at this point I'm looking at planning the ride around being in Russia / Mongolia June - Sep, and then Europe the following summer. Need to piece together the rest of the ride around it.

About 2 days to get out of it!!

From my own experience travelling at a steady pace and spending a week or two at a few places along the way Cape Town to Cairo takes 4 to 6 months, it can be done in 3 or less but that is a rush.
Europe to India can be done in 2 to 3 months going through Iran and Pakistan or 4 to 6 months through Central Asia and China.
Allow at least 3 months for SE Asia although more would be better.
Although you need an outline of a plan expect it to go out of the window as soon as you find a place your particularly like or dislike, I set out for Australia expecting to take 4 to 5 months to get there, it took 10 in the end and I was in India for 4 alone.

FWIW, I'm doing a 3-month long Latin America trip in January, and I'm spending a month in Ensenada, then going from Ensenada to Panama City, Panama. My route will be ~6,000 miles, so it's averaging 100 miles per day if I ride every day. I will most definitely have places here and there that I'll want to stay for a few days, so I think this gives me enough flexibility.

I was thinking to use two years for my RTW, now it seems like it will take four... :cool4:

You can do it really fast, but is it worth it? Remember to calculate some rest days for every week (even you ride just a short days).
