Overlanding planning

Hi all,
for those who're planning an overlanding trip, I've put together various information I already had or gathered on the internet, to summarize on a google map:

- what countries are accessible with a private vehicle
- what border are open or closed (mostly Africa)
- mean temperature and precipitation

This put together should answer most questions in the planning stage. Although of course everything changes pretty quickly and not everybody agree on what is considered "safe" or "not recommended..".

Africa is pretty detailed, Asia somehow, according to the areas I've visited myself, mostly.

I hope this can prove useful to other people, any feedback is very welcome:

Great idea!

Bit of feedback:

Once the animation is started, I can't stop it - even if I click "stop" or change to another view (ie "overland") or click "none".

The highlight for each month is too light to see - I have to squint to work out which month is being displayed.

Animation is a little quick...

As I said though, good idea, like it. :)

That's a great idea Laurent.
Nothing happens when I click on costs. Is that yet to be completed?

Yes no doubt opinions will vary on what constitutes a safe or unsafe country however knowing a few people who have worked in Papua new guinea and judging from media reports it is not known as being particularly safe especially in port moresby and especially if your a western female.

Thanks for putting that together.

Cheers,

James

Thanks for the feedback.

@Dave

I've tested it on OSX and a bit under Windows (IE). What are you using ?
I've fixed the other glitches you mention, thanks.

The "costs" part was an early idea, I haven't had time to compile it yet. It would be nice to have a general idea on the cost of life, as well as fuel prices e.g.

@James

I agree. This is just a very rough overview of what's possible or not at an early planning stage. Part of the fun in planning a trip is to then dig deeper into the particulars of different countries, and this should remain. But this could answer common questions such as : "can I drive from Morocco to Egypt" ? or "Is it possible to cross from India into China ?"

This is by no means a reflection on the safety of different parts of a country. For example, Irak is widely considered a no-no destination, although Kurdistan in the north is quite safe and easy to get into (and have been done many times before). etc..

If this becomes of interest to the community, the idea would be for people to be able to add comments to countries / borders, with links to specific threads on HU or elsewhere. Maybe a link to the FCO website would be nice.

Laurent
