Overland - UK to South Africa

Hiya

We are in the process of planning our overland trip from UK to South Africa this July - has anyone got any ideas on which route to take? Would really appreciate some advice :)

Hi Lin

Can you clarify the question. The africa routes are well documented (im doing South Africa to Egypt in June - happy to share my planning if it would be helpful). Also lots of good blogs around.

I assume you are most concerned about how to get from Europe into Africa? That seems a harder question at the moment.

Cheers
Andy

How are you travelling? Time frame? Have you any preferences at all? What have you done so far in terms of planning the trip?

Due to the political situations there are essentially two main 'routes'. You can cross from Spain to Morocco very easily on the ferry and then take the 'Western' route that must go through Cameroon but otherwise is pretty flexible. Challenges involve visas for Nigeria, Angola and/or DRC.

The 'eastern' route involves crossing somehow from Europe to Egypt, which is much less reliable and may involve air shipping. Visas are significantly easier and cheaper going this road.

Areas that are more-or-less restricted right now are Libya, Algeria, northern Nigeria, western Chad, eastern Niger, Central African Republic and eastern DRC. If you look at a map, you will see that that pretty much cuts off the center.
