The OP, on the other hand, was talking about a trip of up to five months on something like 3000 quid, including buying a bike. There's a big difference between that and your basic US$2000-per-month-plus-bike-and-outfitting journey...which is what you describe.

I realise the differences between the OP's plan and my own trip - but my post was intended to assist him in formulating a trip within his budget and time constraints.

For my money (sic) Russia offers a cheap possibility - provided you stay away from the 'bright lights' cities. Central Moscow makes Manhattan seem like a quiet, sleepy village these days, and costs accordingly!
In the country regions, particularly further east, Russian people are very interested in foreigners, highly friendly and hugely hospitable - and can repair anything (so spares are not a real worry), usually doing it without charge.
