Off-beat & Hidden Gems in India?

I posted in "Travelers Seeking Travelers" for my ride in India that's starting in late July/early August looking for someone that may be interested in meeting up but I also asked if anyone had any suggestions on places to visit or see. Nothing but crickets there so I thought I would try in this forum.

So, do you know of any must-do/see places in India that may not be so well known? Please help make my meandering route most interesting

Thanks for any guidance!

I just looked at your other post and don't say how long you plan to travel for so will assume you have a long time. From Chennai I would head slightly south and inland to Madurai, Munnar, north to Coimbator, Ooty, Mysore, Hosapete to visit Hampi, heading north from there Aurangabad then on up to Rajasthan.
Travel in India is steady at the best of times but you are heading there in the monsoon season which will slow you down and is possibly why nobody has replied to your other post although it is the best time to visit the mountains.

Mark, thanks for the reply. My trip is sort of open-ended (3mths? IDK). I do not know how big of a problem the monsoons will be but since I have time I will be quite zen-like in my travel.

The mountains are the main destination, hence the timing. I was thinking of hitting the south/west regions (Goa, Ooty, down through Kerala, etc.) on my return to Chennai because I feel like I should to make my way north first - I do not know how much I can or want travel in a week given the weather and being new to driving in India. I've spent quite a bit of time there but not driving.

Wife and in-laws think I'm nuts.

Thanks again and I'm adding your suggestions to my list of places to research and making waypoints.
