Northern Pakistan

I'm planning a KKH trip starting in Nepal- India- Pakistan- China etc.

I was just wondering how accessible the Northern part of Pakistan is? Also when is the latest you could really pass through the area before the passes close?

Thanks all.

Hi there

The Khunjareb pass - the pass out of north Pakistan into western China - closes around the end of November until the following spring. Keep an eye out on local online news outlets to give you an exact date. It was the 30th November last year.

If you're going into China then of course you'll need a guide; if you speak the agencies providing that then they will have an idea when it will close.

I came through there a week before it closed and whilst it was doable it wasn't easy. There was a lot of ice and snow and of course v v cold. Warmest point of the day was at -15 celsius.

Best of luck

Ed

KKH is pretty but the adjacent valleys are prettier, something you cant afford to miss. Valleys like Deosai plains, Naltar, Shimshal etc.
Most of these valleys are only accessible between June-November although i have been to Khanjerab in late December.
