North to south
 

I am wanting to do a trip from Prudoe Bay Alaska to Cape Horn.
I have not found the search function on HUBB.
I am looking for detailed routes for Alaska and South America. I know this is broad question. But I have heard this is the place for answers.
Also, when is the best time of year to ride up North?

I have been searching everywhere for information on how to do this trip. My father and brothers and I are looking to do this trip starting spring 2007 after graduation. I am having a really tough time just finding out how far it is, starting in calgary, ab. Leaving the bikes in Buenos Aires, flying home.

We have also been looking into buying the bikes down there, flying down and riding up.

Keep me posted with what you are planning and all the details you figure out.

Search Function - at top right of all HUBB pages, in what you might refer to as the "header".

Route? - there is no route. Its like asking what's the route from New York to San Francisco. There's lots of ways to get from point A to point B. Just depends on what you want to do - want to see - what time of year you're doing it - what countries you want to go through.

HU does have a lot of information to help "guide" you in your decisions, but its up to you to work your way through this. Most of us spend months - if not years - figuring out where we want to go, how to get there.

Buy some road maps and start studying them; cheap and necessary investment if you are serious and they are also what we all probably did to make our own plans. You probably already have a road atlas somewhere of the U.S., Canada and Mexico (nearly 40% of your trip right there).

When to go to Alaska? Most people do this when its warm - which is about the same time as when its hot as hell in Oklahoma.

I've seen many "how far is it questions" here, and found a great way to answer them. Download Google Earth. Zoom to see the region you want to traverse, and go to the TOOLS menu and select MEASURE. In the MEASURE window, select PATH, then click on the map at your start point, and on each place you want to visit along your route. A running total in miles, kilometers, or even smoots will be kept in the window!

A roughly direct route from Alaska to TDF is 10-11,000 miles.

BTW - Calgary to Prudhoe is another 2000 miles

I don't think you can actually get to Prudhoe Bay with a private vehicle, due to environmental and security regulations imposed by the oil companies who operate in that area. I believe that the closest you can get is to Deadhorse, AK, which is about 17 nautical miles from Prudhoe Bay.

I'm not 100% sure of this, but I am about 99% sure. The last time I was in Prudhoe and Deadhorse was about 8 years ago, when I was training pilots up there. I recall that they mentioned that Deadhorse was the end of the 'public road'.

Still correct Michael. You can take a bus tour and put your foot in the water - one traveller took his front wheel off and dipped it in the Arctic!

Kent, I,m going to Alaska for the first time in July.I read somewhere that in Prudoe Bay June is spring, July is summer and August is fall. I don't know about you but for me on a bike that's plain enough.Kenneth
