Newbie In Europe
 

Hi,
I've just joined after seeing a link here from elsewhere.
Im looking at taking off in january, crossing to europe & just touring till im poor & heading back. thinking of going greece direction & maybe back over the alps to see germany & so on. as you can tell my geography isnt great so far.
basicly what im trying to ask is where is good to go at that time of year? to help you out i loved northwest scotland for the emptyness & secenery.

if so, Head SOUTH! Spain is good, 320+ rideable days a year!:D:mchappy:

Then its a short ferry ride to Morocco and wow, big hot place to explore!

is there much good countryside in spain? all ive ever heard of is the beaches & so forth which dont attract. i guess the interior is a lot better?

Suggest you do some reading into the threads in here: use the search facility for any key word that takes your fancy - "spain"?
The roads in Spain are great, paid for by the UK taxpayers -ask that Top Gear geezer!

Anywhere further south and below the Pyranees will be warmer, but even in Spain it can get cold in the winter, especially on the higher ground.
Portugal is another consideration.

But, at this time of year, the limiting factor (for scenery etc) is the short amount of daily daylight.

Do a GOOGLE EARTH "fly" over Spain, pick a part and zoom in. It wont be very green unless near mountains n rivers. But GREAT roads, friendly people, prices half that of the costas n coasts.
you will get to see the type of landscape, I followed Numpty Boorman n Posy McGregor on "The Long Way Round" by doin just that! just for a laff like, its amazing what you can see!

I wouldn't really recommend it as a definite MAP as in some places the roads just don't join up, and near where I live in Spain, roads I know intimately about 60k from my house (ex girlfriend territory....lol) just don't match up and have bits of about half a kilometer mismatch.

Prices here in Spain are reasonable, ( Menu del Dia, or menu of the day is normally say Salad, then paella or soup then chicken and potatoes, a bottle of wine or litre of beer, ice cream or creme caramel and all that for 7 or 8 Euros, about 5 quid!) fags are 3.20 euros for 20 Marlboro, petrol is 1.10 euros a litre ( just gone up, it was less than a euro) beer about 1.15 a bottle, a LARGE brandy is 1.20 euros in a bar or 7 euros a bottle in the shops.

Have a look at my web albums for scenery - most are taken locally to where I live. It's like Scotland but warmer. It's still around 20C during the day, but quite cold at night now (4C).

We're half an hour North of Malaga and 2 hours from Algeciras. Half an hour from there and you're in Morocco.

just realised this morning my insurance runs out at the end of january so its probably a good idea to delay the trip till ive got renewal sorted.
