Mongolia exiting into Russia border crossing.
Hi,
On route planning exiting Mongolia, Can ,I.. as an alternative from Altanbulag.. Use kankha Mondy exit, As I can find next too nothing about it... Thanks Mike.. |
This border crossing has historically been open only to Mongolian and Russian citizens. There are occasional rumours of it opening to everyone, but nothing official.
So in short, no. The road from Khatgal up to Mondy is meant to be extremely rough too, so it would be a long way to go and check for yourself, unless it's winter when you can just drive across Khovsgol Lake. The only road borders currently open to foreigners are Altanbulag / Kyakhta, Tsagaannuur / Tashanta (far West) and Ereentsav / Solovyevsk (far East). There are many others, but they are only open to Mongolians and Russians. EO |
Many thanks for your quick reply,
We will be coming in through Tashanta,, So will exit through Altanbulag back into Russia.... Mike... |
Let's hope Russian land borders open soon.
For clarity, when I say '...currently open to foreigners', I mean in terms of being a multilateral crossing. Russian land borders are currently closed to foreigners (unless you have family in Russia) due to covid. |
No relatives there,
This is all part of route planning for a trip leaving the UK on the 29/5/22.. Which hopefully the world will have settled down to be more sensible.. |
There are only 3 borders possible für non Russians and non Mongolians between Mongolia and Russia
Tashanta in the West, Altanbulag in the north, and Eerentsav in the east. Mongolian Authorities were thinking about opening other borders to gain more tourists, but Russia did not step into this plan. |

All of the border crossings open to international travellers between Mongolia an Russia are marked on the waypoints file in the stickied thread at the top of the Northern Asia regional section. Klaus above has listed the only three international /multilateral road borders between RU and MN (you can also use the train border crossing at Naushki as an international traveller, but then your bike has to be on the train too).
If you are on a road bike then you can forget Ereentsav-Solovyevsk crossing (and you would also never get a road bike to the Mondy crossing on the Mongolian side) ... you are down to just two ... Kyakhta-Altanbulag and Tashanta-Tsagaannuur. |

Mongolia Crossing
Hi Mike
I crossed from Mongolia side into Russia at Tsagaannuur into Tashanta in my Landcrusier and roads were good and pretty hassle free at the border. Allow plenty of time. We slept the night before at house called Blue Wolf run by a hard case Mongolian lady who got us to the front of the line. Regards Ray |
Many thanks
Walter, Ray, For your replys, It will not be happening this year due to the on going problem... It will have to be rescheduled for next year..hopefully.. Mike.. |
