Maps of Africa
 

Im having trouble locating maps of Africa here in Spain, anyone know where I can get a good detailed map showing the best roads as I wont be using a 4x4 and heading straight to SA from Morrocco....any routing ideas would be greatly appreciated

The best stocked place I've found so far is http://www.amazon.com and http://www.amazon.co.uk .

As you recide in Spain, the latter will offer cheaper and quicker shipping and handling. Amazon also has a great selection on travel guides and overlanding books.

On my last order I found that even the most expensive shipping and handling option was cheaper than buying the maps at the local travel store. It should be notet that I live in Norway where everything is rediculously expensive.

Thanks, I came across that sight just yesterday and grabbed what I needed, backed up onto laptop should serve well, just need to locate paper maps now.

I've ordered a few different maps from Amazon and will compare them closer as I receive them. I will post my comments here.

One note though, after comparing the Michelin Africa Central & South 1:4.000.000 map to Globetrotters 1:1.900.000 Tanzania Map, I found that there really wasn't that much big difference in detail. The Michelin map didn't have gas stations and such makred, and lacked the smallest roads, but wa more than adequate enough for our trip from Cape Town to Nairobi. The michelin map does however lack detailed maps of cities and National parks. The Globetrotter map does cover some of these.

For just crossing Africa, the Michelins and a few rough guides/lonely planets is all you really need.

There are IGN's for most francophone countries, and something else for the anglophone countries. For you're route planning these are mostly not required, but I like to have these at hand. The larger scale is just easier to see where you are and where you're going.

Check out www.tracks4africa.com They concentrate on Southern Africa, but have tracks down the whole continent. And their maps can be loaded into Garmin GPSs.
