Hi there I'm new here, a friend and I are thinking about getting home from kl overland, has anyone traveled through Pakistan and Iran recently? This seems to be the only difficult area to pass! Any tips/info would be greatly appreciated. We're thinking of just buying a car or couple of bikes in Malaysia then going for it!

I'll be buying a bike in KL in a couple of days, I'm here looking now. I'm jumping on this thread because it's a similar question to what I have, and also if you guys want to ride together for a while you should say gday :-)

Well I don´t think that is the ONLY difficult area... First of all, you´ll need to get your vehicle into Burma, or China, they are both possible these days, but need a lot of planning in advance, paperwork, and also cash. This very site has up-to-date information on both, and even people looking to get groups together to share the costs.

Then you WILL need a carnet to get that vehicle temporarily imported to India (same goes for Pakistan actually, and Iran as well, although they may not be as strict). And yes, as you have already noted, Pakistan and Iran are not without complications. Also note, that Iran/Turkey border is not a piece of cake nowadays, because of the migrant crisis (the last I heard, borders were actually closed from Iran to Turkey, and they could re-open, and close again, you need to follow the news). Also just now a lot of problems in Turkey, that relate to the fighting between government and Kurdistan/PKK guerrillas.

Don´t mean to put you off, but yes, there is a considerable amount of “red tape” on that route, and on top of that, also Turkey seems right now a lot more problematic, than it has been for several years.

Remember, that you also have the possibility to head from India to North Pakistan, and enter the “Stan countries” via China, that route has been used by several travellers. By doing this, you could by-pass Iran & Turkey, although you would then need to get to Russia (..and most likely avoid its areas close to Ukraine).

If you're still looking to get carnets for your malaysian registered bike then the malaysian AA can help you out. Email mru@aam.org.my, and/or call Salijah Woo on 03 5511 1932 apparently she's the expert! Just got the number today so haven't managed to get in touch yet.

I'll speak to you when we meet anyway, but yes she is very helpful.
Cost is about RM75 for AAM membership + RM650 for carnet fee. The bond is the market value of the bike, be sure to ask Salijah. I have a 2014 Keeway TX200G and they value it at RM5000, bit km in south east Asia for at least six months still so I'll be returning here to get the carnet at a later date, to avoid expiry issues and the like.

Note, that you should not have to be physically present, to get the carnet issued. You should get in contact with the AA before you leave, but when the times comes, when you need it, then they should be able to send it to you as courier mail, at your cost naturally. (I can´t quarantee, that this will always be possible, but talk to them before you leave, and find out).

Didn't know you could get one out of Malaysia as well.

Anyway did you arranged the paperwork outside of Malaysia?

I'm in Laos now and really want to join a tour on the 20th of February from Thailand through Myanmar in to India.

I just sent them an e-mail hopefully they'll send me some pdf files I can fill in and return to them.

How long does it take them to make a Carnet? And is it possible from outside malaysia?

Im presently in Asia and had no issues at all crossing from Singapore to Malaysia.
Customs were more interested to what & where I was traveling.
