If you'll be travelling on a UK passport be aware that you'll have to hire a guide for Iran.

For Pakistan, the Balochistan area along the border with Iran is dangerous, but you will more likely than not have a military levy escorting you the whole way. Also stay away from the regions on the borders with Afghanistan (Peshawar, Chitral, Federally administrated tribal areas).

The UK government also advises against travelling the Karakorum Highway between Islamabad and Gilgit but a ton of travelers do that (as it's the only other way through to India), so you'll have to make your own call on that.

Other than that holidays can be dangerous (particularly holidays for religious minorities - shias, sufis, etc), although violence there is generally directed at members of that community vs foreigners but it's still a good idea to stay away from large religious gatherings.

Not exactly correct:
last summer, at least, Chitral was safe, KKH too.
Anyway, you can easily skip the KKH part between Chilas and Islamabad crossing the Babusar pass.

Things changes quickly, so check infos locally and from other travellers who crossed recently.

Government websites almost always have old and/or wrong infos.

I rode Iran>Pakistan>India a full decade ago, and I´ve got a Finnish passport, so my info is probably not so relevant. Based on following the forums afterwards it seems that the situation has not really changed that much: Iran southeast from Bam, and entire Balochistan on Pakistani side are volatile regions, and there may be police escorts. There may be some security concerns also on the route via China to KKH/Northern Pakistan, but can´t remember any incidents where western tourists have actually been targeted over there. Not many such incidents in Balochistan in a decade either, but it is definitely a possibility, and there is an elevated risk of kidnapping too. Personally I would go through there again, but everyone must decide for themselves. A traffic accident is probably the biggest risk in real life.

Hey. Yep I did it and arrived home last month. Have a read of my threads or ask me anything you want to know. Most importantly DO go up the KKH past Gilgit. It’s all safe and will be the highlight of your trip. Chris.
