Kyrgyz to Dushanbe - Route Options, A372, M41
Hello Travellers!
Looking to find out what are the Route Options from the Kyrgyzstan side (Osh) into Tajakistan (Dushanbe) Would like to take the Pamir Highway to reach Dushanbe and into Samarkhand (Uzbek). For May 2015 travel, is SaryTash, Karamyk, (A372) Route to Dushanbe Open? How are the road conditions? I heard a 4D is a must. Can this not be done in a 2WD regular sedan / saloon? Or is the M41 Route via Khorog to Dushanbe from Osh better? Both from safety and scenic point-of-view? I am not as interested to enter via Khujand as it misses out on what Tajikistan has to offer? Thanks, |
Easy choice: the Karamyk border is closed to foreigners, so the M41 border at Kyzyl Art Pass is your only option.
Road is scenic: probably the highlight of all my travelling over the years You can see my pictures here |
Hello!
I don't know the A372 route, but if you choose the M41 from Osh to Dushanbe, you won't regret! It's stunning! :) You will have few "difficult part" on this road (ford crossings due to the melting snow, ruts etc) but landscapes are wonderful! The quality of the road is bad near the Vanj valley (maybe 200 kms from vanj to dushanbe I think...)... |

Seems like a 4x4 is a must on these roads. I assume around 1st or 2nd week of May is not the best of times? And have got kids on-board! |

M41
Hi there
Travelled the M41 from Osh To Khorog and on to Dushanbe, except for deviating along the Wakhan Valley in July 2014! It's all interesting with spectacular scenery and friendly people. The Wakhan is worth the detour if you have the time. North from Khorog to the junction of the A372 provides fantastic scenery as well. If you wanted to travel in a 2WD you wouldn't have any trouble during the right season, take your time and be careful! it would limit your ability to try out some of the side deviations however! More relaxing in a 4x4 I think.. my opinion anyway. Enjoy it - cheers Globatrol - AUSTRALIANS TRAVELLING OVERLAND FROM VLADIVOSTOK TO THE UK, USA AND SOUTH TO CAPE HORN |
Hi Andy. We agree what was said. 2 WD is possible as long as the weather is your friend.
