Kaliningrad now accessible for with an e-visa (on demand)

E-visa

As of July 2019, Kaliningrad is apparently accessible overland with just a free e-visa that you apply for online, in advance. This e-visa is free, and you can stay for up to 8 calendar days.

It is available for the citizens of Schengen countries plus a bunch of others that are friendly with Russia (I assume, countries that have a mutual simplified visa regime with Russia), but not available for US or UK citizens.

Note: the major road border stations in Kaliningrad are often clogged by locals shuttling back and forth, taking advantage of the cheap fuel, tobacco and alcohol in Russia. I'd highly recommend taking the Morskoje (Kurshskaya Kosa) checkpoint with Lithuania half way along the Curonian Spit. It's a very nice national park with lots of camping there, anyway.

This is great! This makes it much easier to incorporate it in a trip when visiting Poland for example. I would be interested in the coast line.

It does seem annoying to me when making a Baltic sea round trip, for example Poland, Baltic states, visiting St. Petersburg area and then going to Finland for example. Then you would still need a double entry visa of 30 days for example.

Thanks for sharing.

That sucks about the USA. I'm in Poland now and riding north. That would have been great.

Update: The Russian authorities have announced that this program will be extended to St Petersburg (and Leningrad Oblast) from October 1st.

The details of that have not been finalized yet, but when they are, it should be possible to cross between Estonia and Russia at Narva, and between Russia and southern Finland, with an e-visa. So we can finally close the loop of the Baltic on dry land!

Note: Leningrad Oblast extends only down to the tip of Lake Peipus, meaning that you won't be able to cross via South Estonia or Latvia with the e-visa.
