Israel to Egypt on Bike

1 Attachment(s)
Hey folks,

I am driving from Europe to Cape Town this September - ca. December and am currently planning my route, particularly around Egypt. Since it is hard to get your bike directly to Egypt, I decided on taking a RO-RO with ALLALOUF from Venice, Italy to Ashdod, Israel and then drive to Egypt.

I have seen that there are 3 possible routes from Israel to Egypt. I attached a small map to visualise them. I would highly appreciate your opinion and experience on these routes. I could gather the following information about the routes from HUBB so far:

1. The Orange shortcut is forbidden for Bikes and 4x4 due to the security situation on the Sinai half-island. Therefore, I decided on taking the (longer, but secure) blue route around the cap of Sinai.

2. The border crossing at Suez is a gamble with a motorcycle. You might or might not be allowed to use the tunnel. Is it possible to drive to El-Qantara el-Sharqîya (purple route) in that case and cross there?

3. There is a ferry going from Duba, Saudi Arabia to Safaga, Egypt. If I'd take the red route, I coould explore a bit of Saudi Arabia (red route) and eventually take the ferry, which would save time, let me explore Saudi Arabia more and I would avoid the chaos around Cairo. My questions regarding the ferry are:
  1. Has anybody taken the ferry Duba - Safaga already?
  2. Can I take my motorcycle (BMW F800 GS) on it?
  3. Did you experience any issues with the border agents?

UPDATE Just minutes after posting I realised that Duba lies in Saudi Arabia and that Saudi Arabia currently doesn't offer individual visas. So, the red route is currently (as of June 2018) not possible.

Do you have any other suggestions/comments/remarks? They are highly appreciated!

Thanks

Hey Peter U
Kiwi boy here, currently in The Netherlands, planning a similar route and dealing with similar ??s. My train of thoughts at the moment is overland to sth Italy, ferry Greece or directly to Crete, ferry to Israel and try the Israel to Egypt/Saudi thing. I'm a bit earlier - want to be in Tanzania by mid Sept.
Keep in touch - will let you know my issues/resolutions/solutions.

Transalp from Holland to as much of Africa as possible.

There is a couple that have done the Aqaba - Nuweiba crossing a few months ago. All about entering Africa /// VStrom Adventures #072. Her YouTube channel is "Nora" it may be worth taking a look.

Don’t Saudi Arabia have ban on people that have been to Israel?

Saudi maybe but it looks like Jordan doesn't have a problem. It looks like a good route if it stays open

Eilat - Taba boarder: Egypt closed for motorcycles (Oct 2019)

Hello folks!

I'm new to this forum so I guess it's advised that I introduce myself. I'm a german motorcycle enthusiasts that lives in Switzerland, riding a Triumph Tiger 800xc. Currently a friend and myself are on a 10 week trip from Switzerland to Capetown. I researched so much out of this forum that I feel obligated to give a little bit back and share the latest up to date infos with you (eventhough they suck).

We took the salamisshipping route from Greece to Israel, all was relatively smooth and easy. We enjoyed a few amazing days in Israel before we ran into the hammer at the Eilat-Taba boarder: They recently (7-10 days ago) changed the rules for motorcycles and currently there is a ban for whole Egypt to enter with your own motorcycle. I talked to several Israelis on the boarder and they stated they'd crossed on their motorcycles last week without problems. We spent 2 hours at the Egypt boarder and the gentleman there were relatively helpful and tried everything they could to get a exception permit for us to continue our journey but without success. Loading the bikes on a truck to bring them through Sinai or trying the nuweiba boarder is according to them also not possible. The only thing that could help would be a letter of a "big boss" (Embassador, General, Minister,...). Phonecalls to embassies, consulates and other organizations brought no progress so currently the only option for us is to ship the bikes southwards :( Probably to Ethiopia to skip the stress in sudan as well. This can change again as it is common in Egypt but we don't have the time to wait. But let's still hope they change it again really soon!

Taba to Cairo is a long route

Honestly, Taba to Cairo is a long route. Last month, I personally while planning a 7 days trip to Egypt, didn't choose that. So went through Imperial Egypt. :scooter:

I'm also really interested in anyones experience getting into Egypt. I'm planning a similar route from the Netherlands to Egypt and then the east coast down to South-Africa on a motorcyle. We leave in November if all goes well.

A lot will depend on your experiences so please share any info you have :)

Honestly, Luxor to Cairo is a long route. Last year, I personally while planning a 7 days trip to Egypt, didn't choose that. So, went through Ask-Aladdin. Truly Egypt is a nice destination.
