Ireland to Nordkapp, Murmansk and back 2016
I am planning a trip to Nordkapp and Murmansk for next year. I am curious if anyone knows what either of the two roads that google maps shows between Nordkapp to Murmansk are like. I plan to take my Varadero.
Any other suggestions about the trip would be welcome. Planing to take about a month to do it so not rushing |
If you are thinking of the two roads leading towards Kirkenes, I would opt for road 98, which goes from Lakselv and meet the E6 at Tana Bru. From here, you'll have to go along the E6 until you cross the border, and the road changes designation to E105. I have not ridden to Murmansk, so I cannot comment on the roads leading there.

Thanks that looks like a good plan

BTW, when are you planning on going? I'm going to Nordkapp with a band of Brits and a Dutch, and could use some Irish humour to even things out, if interested?

I rode from Murmansk to Nordkapp last summer. I only see one road between Kirkenes and Murmansk on google maps, and only saw one on my paper maps last summer? If you're asking about the route between Nordkapp and Kirkenes--whether to take the road along the coast or ride inland (via Finland) to Kirkenes--I took the coast road and it was fine; fully paved other than a short (4-5 km) stretch of construction.
In any event, the road that I took was fine; paved and in decent condition. Watch out for reindeer and moose on the Norwegian side, they are everywhere, including on the road and in tunnels (!). On the Russian side there are no animals... Where are you going from Murmansk? |

Looking around August time but nothing set in stone as yet. A friend is hoping to come along but he cannot take the time off work to do the whole trip so may ship his bike to Sweden and then back home from Poland Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Thanks for the info. Yeah animals almost the same as Ireland and sheep :) though slightly bigger. If I travel alone to, then may take in Arkhangelsk but if my friend comes along then straight down to St. Petersburg for a couple of days Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Couldn't decide if reindeer were more stupid than sheep or not! Luckily I never met any moose! Standing next to the border fence just outside Kirkenes was as close as I got to Russia - see the photo. What route are you planning to get to Nordkapp?Attachment 15689

That is an interesting document. I must look for it myself. Not sure yet as it depends on a friend. I have a cousin outside Stockholm so may take a day or two there. Then up the coastline I think. I only have a month for it and want a few days in St. Petersburg
