india to isle of man 2007

we are a couple of kiwis in our early fifteies, our plan is: to fly our bmw 100gs/pd to delhi, northan india, pakistan, iran, turkey and on to isle of man for 2007 tt. Can this be done february to may? what is the best route? will snow/cold be a problem? any suggestion appreciated

Matt Cartney 11 Nov 2005 16:15

I'd book your ferry and accom. in the I.O.M. very early as the whole island is completely chockablock in TT week. (And probably the most dangerous part of the trip, its like a war-zone with all the air ambulances flying about and people die every year so take care!)Fun though!
Matt

Hi,

I'm also in the planning stages
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/001062.html

As is someone else going the other way
Europe to KKH and on the India
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000691.html

I'm thinking Jan to do Nepal as well as India. http://www.ferriswheels.com.au/ Do a Nepal trip in Jan so it cannot be too bad?

Think the KKH would be closed due to snow at this time of year though.

Don't intend at this stage spending much time in Pakistan, Iran. Nor Grece, Italy, Spain, France etc. Mainly India, Nepal, Turkey, Morocco then IOM. Morocco could be done after the IOM? Bit hot then but a fall back possition.

----
WWhat are you thinking of doing after the IOM? I've got no inspiration here on that bit yet.

I trust you have also looked at

I'm planning on doing it to. My Duc is in Melbourne right now and I'm in debt in California. Planning on riding from Melbourne to Isle of Man (and the Moto Giro in Italy). Nothing really planned right now. I'm hoping countries in Southeast Asia will ease up on motorcyclists.

thanks for the advice so far, we have accomodation in IOM. we intend to be in india, no further north than dharamsala, in january, then pakistan/iran/turkey febuary/march/april. any idea what weather to expect at this time in these places?

Frank Warner 17 Nov 2005 02:29

The KKH (Pakistan) will be closed to May.
I'd think if we stick south and low in elevation that things should be ok. Turkey could be the worst part as you have to go high - so I'd expect that may have snow?
I'm yet to see/read "Istanbul to Kathmandu" (LP guide) and "Adventure Motorcycling Handbook" (Chris Scotts). I'd think they would have the information - the first one is out of the local libaray, the second I've orderd and should be here ... next week?

The country page on turkey (very good by teh way!) has a link to their weather - this one gives an over view http://www.meteor.gov.tr/indexmaster_eng.htm

Err click on 'climate of Turkey' then
See the temperature one - avoid the green bits?

Oh they also have a 'snow height' page ... hope that is not on the roads.

"Adventure Motorcycling Handbook" (Chris Scotts)dose not have teh climate info.

However a google for Iran Climate got this
http://www.iran-embassy-oslo.no/tourism/climate.htm

"The central plateau of Iran is marked by hot and dry summers and sporadic rainy winters.

The northwest of the country is generally the coldest and among the rainiest parts of the country. The winters in Azarbaijan and Kurdestan can be severe: temperatures well rule between December and February and sometimes fall as low as -20 degrees centigrade. Snow frequently remains until early spring, or even later in the mountains.

In all seasons, always have handy two indispensable items: a woolen pull-over and a pair of sun-glasses."

-------------------------------------------
For Pakistan

http://www.cockatoo.com/pakistan/e-01land/ep-lan11.htm

" The four well-marked seasons in Pakistan are:-

(i) Cold season (December to March).
(ii) Hot season (April to June).
(iii) Monsoon season (July to September).
(iv) Post-Monsoon season (October and November).

The cold season sets in by the middle of December. This period is characterised by fine weather, bracing air-low humidity and large diurnal range of temperature. Winter distrubances in this season accordingly cause fairly widespread rain. Average mimimum and maximum temperatures are 4 oC and 18 oC, though on occasions the mercury falls well below freezing point.

The winter sun is glorious."

---------------------
Turkey

http://www.wordtravels.com/Travelgui...urkey/Climate/
"The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts have very hot and dry summers, and wet, mild winters when the coastal towns more or less shut down between October and April. Winter in Istanbul and Cappadocia can be very cold with a dusting of snow. The peak tourist season is during high summer, roughly between July and September. From June the mosquitoes can be a problem. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, as the climate is still hot, but not unbearable. Eastern Turkey should be visited during summer as roads and mountain passes may close due to winter ice and snow."

From the railfall andx min temperatures - looks like April may be ok.

If you're planning on coming here for 2007, then you might want to arrange your ferry especially now - the Steam Racket have their 2007 deposit site open now at http:www.2007TT.com - it's the centenary so may get booked fairly early.

Bear in mind that, from conversations for this years TT I've seen online, you may get bumped from your chosen booking (i.e., sail to/from Liverpool instead of Heysham or vice versa)

HI,
If you are starting from India, Starting from Delhi will make you loose most of India! You would not have seen India at all,
I strongly suggest you send your bikes by ship(B'cos its cheaper) or air to Chennai or to Pondichery on the east coast of India and then Ride up north seeing India on the way. There are hundreds of places that you can see on this ride from North to the south of India.
Being an Indian myself I can vouch for the fact that starting from Delhi towards Pakistan would make you Miss the INDIA as we know it !
Let me know if you ever come towards central India, (Pune / Bombay) , Hopefully I can be of help to you.
Thanks and regards,
Red Bull

Hi Frank, Robert,

Interesting to read your posts. I am also planning on heading to Europe from Aus starting in Jan 2007.

Frank, I had read that the KKH is open all year as it is a supply route for the Pakistani army and they keep it clear of snow. Have you heard differently?

Look forward to reading your posts.

Ciao,

Nick

I've been reading some Lonley Planet guides. It looks to me like most of the places to stay close down for winter, the side roads close off .. so there is less to do and see and less places to stop off. I like to really see a place when I go there.

I'm thinkin that returning from the IOMTT would be better, June to Dec, along this route. Hotter .. but then I'm an ozie so have some experience with heat.

To get to the IOMTT .. well I'm now lookin at Africa. The climate matches, just a matter of figureing out a route that is interesting, a little safe and doable.

Frank,

That's a good point. Unfortunately I won't be able to wait for summer. I'd rather go, and be a bit cold, than miss out entirely.

Good luck with your plan for Africa.

Nick
