Help with working out distance!

Hi,

I am planning a long bike trip, leaving in a few months time. I would like to work out the approximate distance, and fuel costs, for the trip.

Does anyone know of an online distance calculator for working out the rough milage of a RTW trip rather than just city to city? Or are there any other better ways of figuring distance out?

I am resorting to a large globe and a long piece of string but something tells me, it may not be too accurate!
Any info would be great.

Thanks

Hi mate,

In europe you can use the AA or RAC route finder websites, for example:

RAC Route planner

These will give you routes and pretty accurate distances from place to place, you can even specify the type of road you prefer to use. I expect you can get similar services in North America. What the situation is in the rest of the world, however...

Alternatlively you could just post the following question on this website, "How many miles did you cover on your RTW?" You will probably find someone who's done a trip similar to the one you are planning and who can give you some idea.

Matt :)

just read some trip reports for the continents you're interested in.

Check out this site for approx price of gas world wide - gasoline-germany.com - International Gas / Petrol / Diesel prices - Not sure how recent it is but it will give you a rough gues-timate to how much it'll cost.

A nice international distance finder is Map24.com, but unfortunately, it doesn't cover Asia. This site you can enter the starting point for the continent and the ending point for the continent(not just the country)

I would imagine a mixture of Google Maps and Google Earth would be well used in this scenario. You can modify Earth in many ways to get what you need.

For my trip it has been a mixture of Google Maps and Microsoft AutoRoute (offline solution). But then again I haven't planned out too far ahead so city to city has worked well for me.

In 2004/2005 I did a RTW-trip. Data about distances you can find on my website, page About distances. Have fun!

Good info

Thanks folks, I've pinned the trip down to about 20,000 miles or there abouts, but I guess there's only one way to find out!:mchappy:
