Going south to east, the wandering way.

Hello all, I finaly registered on the Hubb instead of just reading along..
I’m Steven, 22 years old. Always had difficulty being at one place to long, since I started to travel a little bit I found what I really want to do, a long trip, to Africa.

Why I joint the hubb? Because my plans to do a (to me very) serious solo bike trip are now actually going to happen and I need some support in realising it. :helpsmilie:

Lets start on what I got:
  • Will quit my job, so got time.
  • Will work for another 10 months in advance, money.
  • Got 2 bike’s to choose from, or option to get something else.
  • I’m free, nobody holding me back.

Well, I guess that cover’s the basics, don’t it J.
The route is still changing but the basic plan is available,
Ship to South Africa and fly when the bike is there, then drive towards Dubai in however long it take’s. Get a job there and decide whether to go home or to go east, towards India or visit some of Russia on the way back, I wont plan anything behind Dubai.
But before I’ll get there the plan is to cross roughly these country’s:
SA to Namibia then to Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya.
Then I wanted to go strait to Sudan, but I guess that’s not such a good idea..
So, Kenya to Ethiopia, Do spend a lot of time at mount Kilimanjaro!! And do a round trip of Sudan going to Khartoum – Wadi Halfa – Port sudan or something like that.
Perhaps by then a route trough Eritrea is possible, else back in to Ethiopia an on to Djibouti. From there sail out to Yemen, drive to Oman and settle for a while in Dubai.

Well, I’d really like your opinion’s on how doable and how ‘fun’ this route will be, also a guess on how long it would take on average, doing things nice and easy.

The original plan was to do a full overland mostly Sahara trip instead of a more sub Saharan trip, but it turned out like this due to so many difficulty’s like guides and politics in Chad. Now it leaves me with just Sudan as true desert I guess. I would have liked it else but I don’t see other possibility’s perhaps Algeria, Niger, Chad, Libia in a few years…

So, the main reason for this topic is to get your opinions on the plan and the route. Are there a lot of travellers on this route or are most of the travellers going north to south instead of starting at South Africa. Meeting other travellers is something I’m looking forward to as wel, don’t I g the wrong way then? Also, the plan was to start the trip end of November/start of December but I seriously doubt how smart that is with rainfall. But if I go a little later I will end up in Sudan an 50 degrees summer.. Opinions?

Last thing, KTM950 adventure, Honda XR650 or something totally different?
