Getting out of Oz
 

In reading the last post form 2ridetheworld, it appears there are no more shipments from Oz to Indonesia at this time. Simon and Lisa took the last shipment from East Timor when they arrived in Oz, a little while ago.

This begs the question: in prep for a world tour via Asia, what option exist to get out of Oz?

An alternative is to fly .. more $$ but much quicker.

You may be able to ship to Singapore, Malaysia etc from Oz east coast, or even Perth.

Thats a long time ago, the ship from Malaysia to Indonesia is going again and even when the onion boat was not going there was another boat...

there is always a possibility to cross from wherever to somewhere, just have to find it...

Bumping the thread as plans to leave are getting more real...

The goal is to reach Europe at some point but would like to travel via northern India. Any suggestions on how to get out of australia and possible routes?

Then ship to India .. saves trying to get through Burma, or having to ship again to get around it.

Darwin <-> Dili East Timor
Belawan, North Sumatra <-> Penang Malaysia
Bangkok (by air) <-> Kathmandu Nepal

Those would be the most common routes across the seas, and to by-pass Burma. The rest can be ridden, or get ferries through Indonesian islands. After India, cross into Pakistan, and then go around Afghanistan via north or south (north means you go into China and the Stans, south takes you to Iran and Turkey).

Monsoon season is probably not the best time to be in India / Nepal. On the way to Europe, also think about severe summertime heat in parts of Pakistan and Iran. And northern hemisphere winter can make areas in most parts of the Stans, as well as eastern Turkey too cold, at least for motorcycles.

I went Europe to Oz, so the freight agents, that I used, may not be so relevant to you. And it was 5 1/2 years ago, too...

But I used Shell Air in Chennai, India, for airfreighting a DL650 to Bangkok, that cost me about 600€ total (my own flight ticket, about 200€, was naturally not included). Many have sent from Bangkok to Kathmandu, so freight agents in BKK should not be hard to find.

To send across the straight of Malacca, I used Cakra Shipping in Penang, can't remember the price, but wasn't too bad. I believe you could use them also, if you're coming from Indonesia.

Actually I never went to East Timor, because of the -08 coup attempt happened at exactly the wrong time for me, so I airfreighted from Bali to Perth using Qantas. The bike had to fly via Melbourne, so this naturally upped the costs, about 1200€ total, plus my own flight ticket. I had a freight agent in Bali called CAS Cargo, they were in the furniture business, and mine was in fact the first bike they had sent.

When we used them in 2011 we didn't crate the bikes. This caused a few headaches in Singapore so we got Perkins to truck them to the causeway with Malay to save all the paperwork b*llshit.
