Gerona Tunis return Alexandria Venice
We are thinking of a trip next march/April from Gerona to Tunis then through Tunisia and Libya and into Egypt, across to Cairo etc and back out through Alexandria, the ferries seem ok just wondered what the procedure was with the border crossings etc, visas, carnets etc
Any help would be much appreciated Thanks Ian?c? |
You do all your paperwork on the Genoa/Tunis boat. One line for you and then join another queue if you are taking in a vehicle - then customs check when you get to the port.

If you mean for the whole North African section Ian, then it is quite an arseache and expensive too. Tuni is fine, Libya - you may get a transit visa with no escort if you try hard enough - otherwise expensive escort.
Egypt the 800% carnet from the RAC... (negotiable). Chris There's more here: Sahara Overland ~ Country Information |
Sorry, my post is a bit misleading. When I said all the paperwork is done on the boat I meant for entry into Tunisia only:oops2:

When you apply for the visa for Libya your passport will need an arabic translation, a trip to the passport office is required to have the stamp put in the passport, then take your passport to a major Islamic center and they will fill the stamp in for you, for a small fee
Tip:- don't use the toilet at the border of Tunisia and Libya, your in for a long wait so make sure all bodily functions are carried out before arriving, even the cockroaches were gagging:eek3: |
Thanks every one for the advice all information is greatly appreciated
I must remember the cockroach bit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
I'll be in Gerona in April/March, if you need something :)

Agreed, got to rank as one of the worst toilets in the world. BTW I saw a thread on here recently in which someone said that an Arabic passport translation is no longer required for Libya. |
