Germany - Iran and Oman and back in autumn/winter
Hi,
I'm just planning a trip to Iran and maybe Oman and from there back to Germany with our Transalp motorcycles. We want to start in the mid of October. Has someone done a similar trip and can give us some advise? I planned the route roughly like this, but we are still in an early state of planning: Germany - Czech Republic - Slovakia - Romania (I would like to drive through the Carpathians if the weather is still good enough) - Bulgaria - ferry to Georgia or via Turkey if the politics calm down there a bit in the next time - Georgia - Azerbaijan/Armenia - Iran - ferry to UAE (bandar Abbas/Sharjah) - Oman from there way back through UAE - Iran - Turkey or Armenia/Georgia - ferry to Bulgaria - and from there along the Balkans or the coast road back to Germany We think we can do the tour in about 4 months with not too much rush (15-20.000 km). We would also like to do wild camping whenever it is possible. Right now I have the greatest thoughts in the section Iran - VAE - OMAN and back. Has someone done a roundtrip like this? I`m not sure if it is possible to go back to Iran regarding to the visa. The must be a transit visa, but I´m not sure if the Iranian embassy can give me 2 visa and that I can use only one at a time. Unfortunately they didn`t answer my mail yet. Has someone been to Oman an can give some advise about the ferry from Bandar Abbas - Sharjah and about the travel situation in Oman (fuel, cost for accomodation and food). Is it possible to camp in the wild there? Has someone experiences with the weather at this time of the year along the route. Probably it will be quite cold. I hope its not too bad in the southern european countrys and Iran. I would be very grateful for any advise. The rough route I would like to drive: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer...q7nDXQiDcm8D0Q Best regards Stefan |
Hey Stefan,
I rode from Germany to UAE nearly two years ago and got stuck here - wanted to go to Australia initially - and will some day. Started in September and took 3 months to UAE. Central Turkey and Iran was cold already. People who I met travelling just 2 weeks later had snow in some parts! Dont underestimate the high Country. Regarding the two visas for Iran I can't tell you. Weather indeed will be cold, especially on the way back. Ferry including all fees came to $400-500 and was a big mess, 6hours each side but just arrive early and you'll be fine. Uae and Oman is safe and cheap in terms of fuel. Food as well if you live cheap. Hotels are expensive though! Camping is possible easily! Id seriously consider maybe flying the bikes back and have a trip in less a hurry, especially with the quite pricy ferry in mind. Give me a shout once you get close to UAE! :) Sent from my E5803 using Tapatalk |

This is their homepage. There´s no report about Oman, but you find their contact data there. Since they are very nice and helpful people I´m sure, they will answere your questions. Another tip: Erik Peters has been there, a few years ago. I can recocommend his book "Oman - Island". A real good read! http://amzn.to/2aLigv9 Quote:
And we´ve seen many snow chain signes along the road. Quote:

@Larry,
I'm looking to do a week/ten day trip to Oman next Spring. If I drive from UAE, what spots do you recommend me visiting? I'd prefer gravel, don't mind asfalt. Any good places to pick up bikes in UAE, or should I fly straight to Muscat? Cheers! Senna |
