Europe to Mongolia/Pamir - When/where to?

Hi,

Mongolia and the Pamir Highway is been there in my head for some years now. Have been reading and watching so much videos, there is too much information :) therefore I m asking the question here again :/

My biggest questions is if it's possible to achieve this with:
-I would start from Belgium
-departure probably in May this year.
-The bike is normally going to be an Africa Twin (old one) or if not I ll get me a CRF1000 or Yamaha T7 I think.
-I can 'skip' eastern europe by taking Highways if time is precious. But the purpose is to ride 'offroad'.
-travelling with tent accomodation
-end of the trip is only determined by the weather. I assume it gets cold in Octobre/Novembre

What do you think guys, is it possible to combine Mongolia and Pamir in a 4 to 5 months trip? any recommendations?

I f done already an attempt to get to travel a bit 5 years ago but got a traffic accident in Turkey. see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbvZJcc8RwM

cheers

Im planning same route for next year. I will start end of May from Turkey. Final destination will be Ulanbatoor from north route(Novosibirsk) and way back to home will be south route via Pamir. I will stay in UB for one month and planning to finish this trip around mid October.

TO UB:

From UB:

Turkmenistan visa is not easy to get So I might cross from Ozbekistan. Thats why route is not finished.
Total distance 20000-22000 km
I have CRF1000 - 2019.

Nice Nomad AAT.

Is this your general route, and you have other points of interest that you don't want to miss but are not on this route? Gobi desert for example in mongolia? or in georgia not just crossing with the shortest route?
It will add km to the 22k count of course, and surely on time.

I see for example that most part of russia is on tarmak road, are there any alternatives?

@Nomad: I had my crash with my RD03 near Aksaray, 5 years ago :D

Well actually my main goal is Ulan Bator. So i want to go there as fast as possible. When im in there im planning to visit Gobi and other surroundings. I will stay one month in Mongolia. Other places such as Georgia is close to me so i can visit there any time thats why dont want to waste my time. Maybe on my way back i can spend time on alternative routes. But i want to finish this tour before November.

Want to visit Xinjiang and Darvaza gas crater but its not easy to visit(bc of visa, guide etc.)

Aksaray is one hour away from my place :)

Yes.

Left Paris late May 2019, riding 2x WR250r. Passed through F,D,Pl,Lt, Lv, (relatively quickly and easily ~300km/day), R arriving in Moscow.

Loaded the bikes on the trans Siberian train for the ride to Novosibirsk (having already driven the roure in a 4x4, we know that its a long boring drive, we wanted to save tires, chains brakes for Mongolia).

Passed through Mongolia, exiting in the far east, arriving in Vladivostok, then the Ferry to Japan by mid August.

The best part of the trip was couch surfing from one Russian biker club to another. Check out ADVrider Tentspaces page and make contact with our Russian colleagues. From there they'll pass you on to the next club. Such great people, such solidarity. Highly recommended.

I have the same idea as you. departure from the Netherlands in May. did you get more info yet? I which countries you need to apply for a visa in Europe, for example? and the temperatures? I'm afraid I'm too late for Mongolia. I have two weddings that require me to return in July. now looking for a place where I can park my motorcycle and leave the country (without a motorcycle) Any suggestions anyone?

If you want to avoid all the boring slab across the Russian/Kazakh Steppe, why not look into shipping your bike from Europe to Kyrgyzstan with ADVfactory |

To everyone planning this route Europe-Russia-Mongolia:

Where do you get information on what land borders are even open at the moment and next year?

According to the German Ministry these borders are currently closed for tourism:
- Uzbekistan - Tadjikistan closed
- Tadjikistan - Kirgiztan closed
- Kazakhstan - Russia depends on being able to obtain a Russian Visa
- Mongolia - Russia closed

I dont know how up to date that information is, so other resources are welcome!

As my plans did lead me too in east direction for 2021, I did collect some Informations here:

https://vanlife.4x4tripping.com/2021...d-journey.html

There you find links to updated informations on Wüschi, Carvanistan, social media and back at hubb :shifty:

Wüschi is very well maintained about open borders. My focus was on pamir and rob - but guess the important stuff is linked there.

with the weddings, it makes it more or less 2 months to do the whole trip - according to me standards I think that's a rush. I want to take my time to see everything and come back too :)

I am not limited in time but in temperature, I like to (wild)camp most of the time and now I ll only be able to leave in June, even the end of it. I think I ll do it in at least 3 or 4 months since I like to avoid tarmac.

I have no idea about visa's etc... I m starting to figure out now :)

Next year or even next week is anyone's guess, but a good source of information is here: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice - it's geared to UK citizens but there is a lot of useful advice and it's kept current. Many pages have links to the website of the country in question so you can check directly.
