distance and time crossing kazakhstan into Russia
 

Just trying to work out date of entry for Russian visa.

I believe I can get a 15 day Kaz visa for free now, so wondering if that is realistic to cross Kaz from Aktau to Russian border crossing at Shemonaika?

According to google maps it around 2.5k miles (nearly 4k km) and 52 hours - 6 hours a day (= 9 days ish)
Anyone got any real experiences ?

Then from there, again on google maps it 4.5k miles (6.3k km) 81 hours to Vladivostok.

Any thoughts ?

Depends on you. If your trip is about driving, no problem at all, 14 days will do. If your trip is also about visiting KZ, you need 1 month, everyting in KZ to do or visit is time demanding.
