Darien Gap Anyone?

Just finished Ed Culberson's book on his crossing of the Darien Gap. Intriguing.

Has anyone made that trip recently?

Would love to hear more.

I'm leaving Brooklyn, NY any day (week?) now, and should be in Panama late December.

Cheers

I am planning to trek through the Darien on my trip from Argentina to Alaska. I should be there in April 2002. I don't think I will go through the hassle of pushing my bike in the jungle, although I would love to.

A piece of warning on the Darien:

Even when Ed C. did the trip, other people tried and was never found. Today the situation in the jungle is worse, with guerillas, drug smugglers, military, para military and who knows what else, roaming the jungle and creating a bit too much of challenge for my liking. We drove to the Panamanian Darien region just before Christmas, 2000, and stopped at the border (the border to the region, not to Colombia). The soldiers clearly warned us that if we went any further, they could not guarantie that any soldiers we met were from Panama. They could just as well be guerilleros from Colombia.

If you're into real "adventure", go ahead, but be aware of the (high) risks.
