Colombia to Ushuaia
 

Planning a 5 month trip. Colombia down to Ushuaia back to Chile. we have some flexibility in timing. Riding DR650's.

What would be the best weather window for the trip to run north to south?

You want to be in Ushuaia in the middle of their summer, otherwise it's just too cold and nasty - Antarctica is just a little ways away! Ushuaia for Christmas / New Year is popular, a lot of travellers congregates there for a big party.


You might also want to plan on going to Antarctica. Expensive but WELL worth it.

My wife and I set off from Bogota early September 2018, on a DRZ400 & an XT225, so not breaking any speed records. We got to Ushuaia late Jan 19 and then back up to Valparaiso by end of Feb. Generally we had perfect weather for the trip. The rainy season was allegedly starting as we headed through Peru in November. It rained a bit, but we still managed to a get a clear sunny day at Machu Picchu. The following day it was raining and low cloud. The Salar de Uyuni and the lagunas route were dry when we passed through in Early December. Patagonia was windy (as always) and a little chilly, but again we managed to mostly avoid the rain. It was a great trip, but as always, not long enough...

The girlfriend and I started in Bogota in early October 2018 and finished in Punta Arenas around Mid March. We had great weather throughout our trip. We spent 45 days in Peru from mid-November through early January (rainy season) and only got rained on a few times. Also, Patagonia in February and March was very manageable for us - had a few very windy days but nothing like some of the stories we had heard from other travelers.

Overall I think we timed it perfectly for a 6 month trip - perhaps we got very lucky. Your biggest constraint will be finishing your trip before the weather/winds in Patagonia make riding miserable. Mid-late March might be a good target to shoot for.

My girlfriend and I just completed a journey from Cartagena Colombia down to Ushuaia and all the way back to AZ. Honestly the only weather we planned around was the Ushauia. We rode down to Buenos Aires, staged the bikes and then set off to tag the end of the world on Oct 1st. We went against some recommendations as we had our own schedules to maintain. We took plenty of cold weather gear and it worked out great!!
