China - Europe Tour Planning

Starting in June 2020 I'll have some time to go for a ride.
On the bucket list is a ride from China to Europe.
In this thread I would like to keep track of all findings (so others can potentially leverage on the information).

Topics on my mind:
- Can I buy register and ride a motorcycle in Shanghai on a tourist visa?
- Will I be able to ride the bike across China to the Stans or even Lhasa?
- Will I be able to leave China with the bike?

Upfront search:

The links already provided some answers to my questions.
However, I think all statements have to be verified before drawing conclusions.
For this reason I decided to dig deeper before blindly (re-)posing a unverified statement.

Greetings,
Wauschi

First finding on: Can I buy and register....

Yes, sure you can, if you have the budget.
Registration in Shanghai is in the range of 9k - 40k Euro and you will need time and luck.

Unless I find a city with more relaxed laws my endeavor seem pretty much over.

Another option is not to buy a bike in China but to enter from outside on a temporary plate, license, see:
公安部修改临时入境机动车和驾驶人 理规定

Quote:

...temporary entry for motor vehicles and drivers, need to get a temporary number plate and temporary vehicle registration, temporary drive license from local authorities during entry. Need to prepare tables fulfilled in Chinese and Chinese translation for all original documents
Has anyone done this before?
Even after reading the site I still have no clue on where/how to arrange the temporary plate or license.

Is riding across China that important for you?

Getting a tourist visa to mainland China is easy. They have good public transport. You can take trains and planes to most places easily enough, even far-Western tourist destinations like Dali/Lijiang, Tibet, etc. If you do that part of the journey without a bike, and buy a bike only in Central Asia (or, say, Mongolia and go back via Russia), that makes your journey automatically much simpler.

China

Hello Wauschi,

good idea to ride from China to Europe.

Maybe you read about my journey through China in 2015, if not pls read here

You have listed Mychinamoto.com above, I also used this get a bit of information. There are a few HU members in China, contact them. The member Nuff Said comes to my mind, he helped a friend of mine to buy a bike in China and tour around.

Buying a bike should not be a problem, but to register it in your name is not that easy as we are told. I never had to register my bike, so I dont know. But dealing with bureaucrats in China is a nightmare.

Do also your homework about leaving China with your bike, I recall somebody here on the HUBB did it at a smaller border crossing West of Urumuqui into Kazahkstan, because he could not cross at the main boder station. For me it was more difficult to leave than to enter.

My advise: buy a bike in a smaller city, not Shanghai, and just ride ... dont put any number plate on it if the bike comes without. Dont spend too much time on papers etc, but listen e.g. to Nuff Saids advise as well. If you cant leave China with it, sell it in Kashgar and buy another bike in Kyrgistan and continue your ride.

You can do it. All the best.
